ABOUT MCDONALDS
BACKGROUND:
McDonalds were formed in 1954; McDonald's brand is the leading global foodservice retailer with more than 30,000 local restaurants serving nearly 50 million people in more than 120 countries each day. The rich history of McDonalds was began with the founder Ray Kroc's vision and his commitment, transformed in the talented executives, and will keep the shine on McDonald's arches for years to come. McDonalds is now become one of the prominent fast food chains, both nationally and internationally. And this simple thought sums up the reason McDonald's has become the best known and most popular quick service restaurant around the world, quite a tribute to Ray Kroc, who founded this company nearly 50 years ago with the simple vision expressed by his phrase 'Take good care of those who work for you, and you will float to greatness on their achievements' In 1965 McDonald's went public with the company's first offering on the stock exchange. A hundred shares of stock costing $2,250 dollars that day would have multiplied into 74,360 shares today, worth approximately $3.3 million on December 31, 2006. In 1985 McDonald's was added to the 30company Dow Jones Industrial Average "Introduced systemwide in 1968, the Big Mac was the brainchild of Jim Delligatti, one of Ray Kroc's earliest franchisees, who by the late 1960s operated a dozen stores in Pittsburgh." McDonalds has now improved its ice cream quality and have a contract with Nestle in dairy products. McDonalds annually revenue is US$ 22.79 billion. Usually McDonalds deal in hamburgers, chicken, french fries, soft drinks, milkshakes, salads, desserts, breakfast meals etc. There are some products of McDonalds which are famous through out the world and brings huge revenue for the company. Some of those products are BigMac, McRoyal, Fillet-o-Fish, McFlurry, and many more. Till now McDonalds is the worldwide leading fast food chain who is having the utmost variety of burgers and desserts.

MCDONALDS IN PAKISTAN:
Aiming to be the world's best quick service restaurant, McDonald's Pakistan opened its doors in September 1998 at Lahore and Karachi and presently operating in six major cities with a network of 20 restaurants. With a strong belief in the Ray Krock phrase when you are green you are growing, McDonald's Pakistan has an aggressive plan to expand in all other cities of Pakistan and is rapidly growing with the focus to provide friendly and quick service restaurant experience to our customers.

LAKSON GROUP OF COMPANIES:

McDonald's Pakistan is a part of the Lakson Group of Companies, with a Head Office in Karachi and a regional office at Lahore. PROGRESS:
McDonald's is the fast moving restaurant in Pakistan and the ideal family feast place. McDonald's started its business in Pakistan in 1998 and till now it has created its market place and improved a great deal in quality. Now McDonald's produces its own burger buns where as in past these buns were brought from Wonder Bakers. Now McDonald's is having 31000+ outlets worldwide and 20 outlets in Pakistan. Till now, around 390000 employees are the part of McDonald's family.First McDonald's was a typical beef dealing restaurant but now they have introduce chicken meat also in there meal category like, BigMaC Chicken and Chicken nuggets. McDonald's is also famous for its ice creams and desserts. The Sundaes and McFlurry are the trademark foods which is having eminence throughout the globe. On July, 08 McDonald's introduce its four new flavors of McFlurry which has been appreciated by customers especially by the age group of 18-30. McDonald's usually designs a special type of food for kids which is probably known as HAPPY MEAL, this meal deal is still rated as the best food box by the kids since its inception McDonald's have introduced a new and innovative deal for the office working group and it is getting its demand more and more, in short

it can be rightly said that McDonald's is growing further and flourishing its progress by time to time and proving the universe to be the WORLDS NO.1 FASTFOOD CHAIN.

COMPETITORS:
McDonald's is having numerous numbers of competitors on national and international market. Although McDonalds is having its own specialty but still it has been fighting with its rivals since its brand name inception.

On national level, there are many fast-food chains which are sturdy and give tough time to McDonalds as it is still new in Pakistans food chain market business. Here some of the prominent competitors of McDonalds are Subway Chicken King Pizza Hut Indulge Dominos Mr. Burger Nandos

All the above brands are the strong competitors of McDonalds and they also attain a huge market share, but still according to the local survey and current info K.F.C. is the biggest rival for McDonalds. Comparatively the products of both the restaurants are same and even ice creams and desserts are quite similar and both the brands are having proficiency in burgers, so it can be vindicated that it creates a healthy competitive neck to neck duel for increasing the ones market share.

OUTLETS:
McDonalds is having its 31,000 + outlets through out the world from which 20 outlets are in Pakistan.

MASCOT OF MCDONALDS:
Ronald McDonald is a clown character used as the primary mascot of the McDonald's fastfood restaurant chain. In television commercials, the clown inhabits a fantasy world called McDonald Land, and has adventures with his friends Mayor McCheese, the Ham burglar, Grimace, Birdie the Early Bird, and The Fry Kids. The McDonald's Corporation has also characterized Ronald McDonald as being able to speak 31 different languages including Mandarin, Dutch, Tagalog and Hindi. In recent years, McDonald Land has been largely phased out, and Ronald is instead shown interacting with normal kids in their everyday lives. Many people work full-time making appearances in the Ronald McDonald costume, visiting children in hospitals. There are also Ronald McDonald Houses, where parents can stay overnight when visiting sick children in nearby chronic care facilities. Since August 2003, McDonald has been officially recognized as the "Chief Happiness Officer" of the McDonald's Corporation. According to international polling survey Ronald McDonald is the second most recognized figure in the world (after Santa Claus). The origin of Ronald McDonald involves Willard Scott (a local radio personality who also played Bozo the Clown on WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. from 1959 until 1962), who performed using the moniker "Ronald McDonald, the Hamburger-Happy Clown" in 1963 on three separate television spots. These were the first three television ads featuring the character. George Voorhis is a late 20th Century American performer who performed under various monikers as a clown. He claims to have been the 'original' Ronald McDonald. 11

At any given time, there are dozens, or possibly hundreds, of actors retained by McDonald's to appear as Ronald McDonald in restaurants and events. It is assumed, however, that the company uses only one actor at a time to play the character in national television commercials. Following is a list of such primary Ronald actors.

Willard Scott (Washington, D.C. 19631965) Bev Bergeron (Southern California, 1966-68) George Voorhis (South California, 1968-1970) Bob Brandon (1970-1975) King Moody (1975-1984) Squire Fridell (1984-1991) Jack Doepke (1990-1992) Joe Maggard (1994-2007) Brad Lennon (2007-Present)

Various forms of the name "Ronald McDonald" as well as costume clown face persona, etc. are registered trademarks of McDonald's. McDonald's trains performers to portray Ronald using identical mannerisms and costume, to contribute to the illusion that they are one character. McDonald's marketing designers and stylists changed elements of the Ronald McDonald character, persona, style, costume and clown face when they adopted the clown as a trademark, possibly in deference to "The Code", the tradition of clowns to scrupulously avoid copying other clowns' appearance or performance style. Some other chief mascots of McDonalds are as under:

Birdie the Early Bird The Hamburglar Grimace Iam Hungry CosMc Fry Kids King Gonga Mayor McCheese Uncle O'Grimacey

MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS FROM THE EYES OF MCDONALDS MANAGER

PLANNING
What is planning:
Defining the organizations goals establishing an overall strategy for achieving those goals, and developing plans for organizational work activities

Why do McDonalds Manager Plans?

According to the approach by McDonalds manager planning is important for setting goals. It is important for every organization to set sum objectives and goals with respect to the customers. Then we plan to establish the strategies in order to achieve those goals. McDonalds basically plan to get the direction that how, when and at what manner work has to be done. They believe that there are many low chances of uncertainty while we plan. It really minimizes the wastage and redundancy. If our employees and other worker will know that what targets are to be achieved and how, then there are very less chances of mistakes, risks, and wastage and this can only be done if we plan. Example: McDonalds is an international organization so they work with all the elegance and sophistication for this they plan their schedules. What steps are they going to take to enhance their quality of the products, what products are needed to launch in order to attract more the customers. All these decisions are taken and then planned according to the requirement.

Desired outcomes from individuals, groups or entire organization

The goals are established keeping in mind the main purpose of the organization either the goals are to achieve good sales only or to satisfy the customers needs and wants. McDonalds goals are established considering their customers at first priority. They believes that if we are fully successful in satisfying our customers by providing good quality the n profit box is automatically in our pocket. Their goals involved the accuracy of work, the employees that how capable their employees are, and unto what extent they are able to retain the accuracy. Further they emphasis on the services. It is the major goal of McDonalds to provide the quickest and extraordinary service to their customers. Another highly yearning goal of the organization is to maintain cleanliness to all the outlets of McDonalds.

PLAN:

McDonalds plans are long-term in nature. As it is a food business Organization so they have some particular ways of working those cannot be change just in a year or two. Because of this they go for long term planning. Their plans are directionally designed. APPROACHES TO ESTABLISHING GOALS:

Normally the organizations go for two kings of approaches for the establishment of goals which are as follows: i) Traditional Goal setting:

16

An approach to setting goals on which goals are set et the top level of the organization and then broke down into sub-goals for each organizational level. ii)Management By Objective(MBO): a process of setting mutually agreed-upon goals and using those goals to evaluate employee performance.

McDonalds Approach For The Establishment Of Goals:

McDonalds goals are established by the MBO PROCESS. The reason of carrying this process is to work in a healthy and professional environment which includes the involvement of the managers of all levels, due to which the goal setting can be highly effective. Another reason is that it gives the courage and motivation to the employees. By which employees work more efficiently which increases organizations productivity.

FOR EXAMPLE:
The top level manager of McDonalds is interested in launching a new flavor of any dessert or any different kind of burger then he will throw his idea to the managers of all level and call in the meeting to discuss this new idea. This will help them in designing a good launch because by the mutual discussion it is easy to scan the conditions that what are the resources status , how employees are going to handle this task, is it suitable to match the capacity of work by the employees. And by then a mutually agreed-upon goal is set which is going to be very productive and helpful to increase the reputation and productivity of the organization.
