In any building structure, load is transferred from theslabs to the beams, from beams to the columns andfrom columns to foundations. In elementary structuralanalysis and design, axial forces on the beams areneglected and bending moment acting on columns areoverlooked. However, in reality, both beams andcolumns are often subjected to axial forces andbending moments respectively. Such a structure is
known as a “Beam
Column”. In this self study report,we briefly introduce the theory behind a “BeamColumn” structure followed by two solved examples.
A step-by-step procedure for designing beam-columnsaccording to BS5950 practice code is shown as a flow-chart.
