"Doing Homework With Friends"
By Ron Kurtushttp://www.school-for-champions.com/grades/withfriends.htmEveryone knows that working on a project with a total stranger is nowhere near as productive asworking with someone your comfortable with. However, this article explains that if you work withsomeone your
too
comfortable with, it can lead to problems. Therefore, "Doing Homework Withfriends" gives some general ideas and tips to get one started when working in a study group or on a project. First off, the site explains that one must be very picky when choosing partners. Although itsounds superficial, pick someone who has shown time and time again that they are smart and work hard. When you are working with someone who goofs off and leaves all the work to you, it can leadto stress and anger. Because of this, the friendship could be ruined. Also, the site offers aninteresting method of setting time limits to when projects begin and end. This creates order andstructure, making the whole process run much smoother. However, it also offers the tip that oneshould finish up with the goals that they had set before the start of work even if it goes a little over the time limit. This suggestion prevents one from procrastinating during the time selected to work, because no one wants to work overtime. The site presents these thoughts and ideas in an easy simplistic nature. It gives seven different tips, and then goes into depth about each in a paragraph. And even if one does not understand theseconcepts for any reason it then gives a quiz at the end to drive the points home! It doesn’t get mucheasier to understand something than this. This site would make some sense for a high school student; however, I would suggest it to middleschool kids. From past experience, I realized that I work on a more individual level in high schoolthan ever before. On the other hand, in junior high school I worked on group projects around theclock.I’d only suggest one thing to this site’s author. It might help one much more if he added in a sectionon how to work with people that
do
goof around. Although the majority of the ideas pertain to thesesituations, sometimes, when working in pre-selected groups, one who doesn’t focus needs somespecial attention. However, in conclusion, I found this site informative and helpful. I just wish I hadhad some of these ideas when I worked on some of my past projects.

October 11, 2001Homework http://ws1.kidsource.com/schwab/ten.homework.tips.schwab.html"Ten Homework Tips" is an article which stresses the importance of parent involvement in their child’s schoolwork, and lists three, helpful hints in order to help with homework. The tips, in short, are as follows:1.Keep in touch with teachers and be aware of the amount and type of work being assigned.1

2.Set up a schedule for your child including a starting and an ending point each day for working on homework. Allow for a small break after school, and encourage completion of the weekend’s homework on Friday.3.Encourage your child to split up assignments into two categories: ones that can be donewithout help, and ones that require help.4.Prioritize- homework must be done before watching television, going on the internet, etc.5.Provide a good working atmosphere for your child (for example, a corner with a lamp, adesk, pens, pencils, etc.).6.Praise your child for completion of homework and other academic accomplishments.7.Be accessible when your child is doing homework; however, being in another room isfavorable over being in the same room.8.Look over the homework once it is finished. Do not correct it unless you check with theteacher.9.Encourage study groups, but make sure the children are studying rather than socializing.10.Allow bathroom, drink, and snack breaks, but make sure your child stays on task.I learned that it is proven that parent involvement helps the child do better in school. The site is very clear and helpful to the reader. It is very straightforward, and presents theinformation in a lost form which is easy to read and understand.I recommend this site for parents who wish to improve their child’s study habits. The site can serveas a good guide to getting your child organized and more "on top of his/her work."The only suggestion I have for this site is possibly adding a section directed more toward the child, since both the child and the parent need to participate in order to gain success. I feel, however, thatthe site does a good job of presenting the information.

January 16, 2002Dr.JacobsZip Through Homework – tips for good grades / Get Homework Donehttp://www.school-for-champions.com/grades/homework.htmA: I learned that in order to do well on homework, a student should set an allotted time to do it in. Ialso learned that in order to do well, you must prioritize your homework, putting the most difficultand time consuming assignments first on you list. I also learned that it is ok to listen to music whileyou are completeing an assignment. Television, however is much more distracting, and will effectthe quality of your homework, while music does not. I also learned that you should switchstudying/doing an assignment for a particular subject about every 40 minutes. You can go back tothe assignment, but 20 minutes is the recommended time, because you are using a different part of your brain for each subject, making it easier to get done faster. The attitude I think I developed fromthis was that it is ok to jump around from assignment to assignment. I also have a new attitude notto spend hours at a time on a particular project, because I will complete my assignments faster if Ispend about 40 minutes on it, take a break and go back and work on it later.B: The site is VERY readable. It’s very clear and gets right to the point. It may seem like there is nota lot to learn, because of how short it is, but it has some great facts and what is on the web site idvery informative. The concepts are very clear and concise.2

C: this web site would be very useful to a high school student, however I think a middleschool-agedstudent may benefit more. There were some great tips for getting your homework done quickly, and probably would be great skills to get into the habit of doing around 6
th
or 7
th
grade when the realhomework begins to be assigned. I thought this web site would benefit many different age groups!

February 18, 2002D periodDr. Jacobs"Zip through Homework"http://www.school-for-champions.com/grades/homework.htmEveryday after school you know that there will always be homework to do. Sometimes there is justso much you do not think you will be able to get it all done in just one night. I decided to check outthe web page called, "Zip through Homework" to see if there is anything that could possibly helpme on those nights it seems like the work never ends. This site actually did help give me somehelpful pointers. The site begins with some tips on getting your work done faster. For example, keep a goal in mindand focus on it. Finish the goal in the amount of time you set. To help figure out how long it takes tofinish an assignment time yourself. If you are spending more than an hour on the assignment andthe teacher said it should just take 20 minutes. That may mean you do not understand the correctconcepts and you might want to go in for some extra help. Also, this site gives a couple links toreading faster and special homework skills that will help to decrease the time spent on homework. To zip through your homework you must keep a goal in mind, try increase reading and memoryspeed and you will complete your homework in no time.Following those suggestions is a sample of a reader question. It is about a kid who is failing schooland does not know what to do. The site gives some suggestions about what to do. A few of themare:1.Get a specific study area2.Schedule your time3.Try to sit near the front of the class4.Ask the teachers for helpA mini quiz is given at the end to test your understanding of the website. This site is very suitablefor high school students and easy to understand.

May 29, 2002Dr. Jacobs – D Period"Zip Through Homework"http://www.school-for-champions.com/grades/homework.htmThis site was great in helping me try and focus on my studies. Being the fourth quarter, spring isarriving and many students including myself are tempted to let our studies slide and enjoy the beautiful weather and pretend that summer has begun. This site offered a few tips to focus my mindon studies again. The site understands where most students are coming from. It talks about how allstudents want to just get their homework done with and go out with their friends, and there areeffective ways to do this. The first thing the site offers is to have an "attitude of speed." If you have3
