Parshat Devarim/Tisha B’av

 July 28, 2012 9 Av, 5772
Sefer Devarim, the last of the5 books of Moses, containsthe words of rebuke andencouragement given byMoshe to his people in thelast days of his illustrious life.As he tells of the highlights of the Israelite's travels over the40 years in the desert, the taleof the spies surfaces as a keyturning point in the history of our people. At the request of the masses and with theconsent of G-d, Moshe agreesto send a group of righteousleaders, one from each tribe,to investigate the nature of the Promised Land and itsinhabitants. Supposedly, withthe information in hand, astrategy for conquering theland would then be devised. But history would not work out as planned. The spiesreturned with a negative, fearinstilling report. ''The land isgood, but the inhabitants are just too strong for us toconquer and remove from theland", they announced. Thepeople started to cry and thenrebel in spite of theassurances of Yehoshua andCaleb. Hashem in His angerdecided to kill off the entiregeneration during 40 years of wandering in the desertbefore allowing their childrento enter the land asconquerors. "Tonight youcried for no reason" Hedeclared, "therefore, you willcry for generations on thisnight."And so it has been for thousands of years --the mazal--luck-- of theJewish people has been bad on thatnight-- the night of Tisha B'av. Thefirst and the second Temple weredestroyed by gentile armies --onTisha B'av. The city of Bitar wasraped and pillaged and hundreds of thousands of our gentle brethrenwere slaughtered on Tisha B'av. TheJews were expelled from Spain andEngland--on the night of Tisha B'av.The terrible history of thedestruction of Judaism in Europe atthe hands of the Nazis y''s, beganwith the political upheaval of WorldWar I, which, not coincidentally, began on the night of Tisha B'av in1914.What connection is there betweenthe sin of the spies and thedestruction of the Temple inJerusalem? What can we do to rightthe wrong and end the exile that wehave been suffering for 1937 years? Our Sages explain that the people, who lived at the time of the Temple'sdestruction by the Romans learnedTorah, did mitzvot and performedacts of kindness. Why was theTemple destroyed? Because of sin' athinam--baseless hatred. Jealousy andselfishness created differences inpeople. ''Why does he drive such anice car and I pray that mine willstart every time that I put the key inthe ignition?''--''I work so hard anddo everything with impeccablehonesty, so how come his business isflying and mine can't show a profit?''
Rabbi Raymond Beyda on Parshat Devarim/Tisha B’av
Questions like these are at theroot of baseless hatred. Theydoubt the correctness of G-d's"distribution system". You mighteven go so far as to say that theyreveal a lack of Faith!Herein lies the connectionbetween the sin of the spies andthe destruction of the Temple. The people became frightened bythe report of the spies becausethey lacked faith in G-d's abilityto deliver the Promised Land inthe face of mighty enemies. Thepeople at the fall of Jerusalemsuffered from jealousy andselfishness which are rooted in alack of faith and are manifest insin' at Hinam--baseless hatred. The night of retribution for bothis the same Tisha B 'av!This year, as we prepare for thefast of Tisha B'av we must getinto a mode of "correctivesurgery". Drastic steps must betaken if we are to heal thewounds of exile and bring thesalvation and the restoration of glory to our people. Love thyneighbor must be activelypursued. Lashon ha-ra must beeliminated. Jealousy andselfishness must be exorcisedfrom our personalities. It's all amatter of FAITH! Our Rabbisteach that the way to learn how tocorrect our character is throughthe study of Torah. A regularprogram of Torah study, with theintent to correct our faults canbring perfection of our traits and
