How to Read a Patent
Let’s look at a patent for an “infant’s curiosityarticle.” The inventor is not an expert in the
field. She was a staff member at the Schoolof Dentistry who became frustrated when shecould not find suitable toys for her nieceswhen they were babies. She wantedsomething soft and colorful that they couldreach for.
 
This is the screen your willsee when you find apatent in the U.S. Patent
and Trademark Office’s
patent database. Notethat the boxes at the top ofthe screen allow you to a
“quick” search and an“advanced” search or to
search by patent number.You can also click on the
“Images” button to get an
image of the actual patentwith any drawings. Hereis the first page of apatent. You can see the
inventor’s name, the
patent number and theregistration date in the topbox.
 
In the next box you cansee the title of the
invention. It is an “infant’scuriosity article”. The
abstract contains asummary of the invention.The next box contains the
inventor’s full name and
address, the patentapplication number and thedate her patent applicationwas filed.The Current U.S.Classification numbers,shown on the right side ofthe page, are particularlyuseful. You can use thesenumbers in a search to findpatents that are similar.
