The Evolution of the
Unknown
Theme
2012: The Evolution of the Unknown

The theme we chose focuses on the unknowns in art. The entire unit leads up to
the theories of 2012. These theories present unknowns for the future of society. It is
appropriate to evolve the unit to this place. Our overall focus is on the unknown in art
and society.

THEME: 2012: The Evolution of the Unknown.
LESSON #: 1
OVERVIEW:
The students will observe and choose a style of art to focus working on for the
unit. They will complete further research on this style in this lesson.
APPROACH TO STUDYING ART:
Artistic Heritage-Expression
Art in Society-Expression
COMPONENT:
Cultural/Historical
OBJECTIVES:

1. Students will investigate the role and functions of visual art.
2. Students will demonstrate the ability to research independently in order
to increase their understanding of visual art and to further knowledge on a
variety of themes.

COMMON ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS:
CCT-Critical and Creative Thinking
TL-Technological Literacy
SET:
Teacher opens the lesson with a power point presentation.
DEVELOPMENT:

The presentation is on different styles of art that contain an element of the unknown
(examples include surrealism, cubism, German expressionism, etc). The teacher presents
each style.
The teacher would inquire students to answer the following questions:
-What images do you recognize in this piece?
-What is unknown to you in this piece and why?
The discussion could end with the students considering the question:
-What does the unknown mean to you?

The teacher asks the students to choose one style from the presentation. The teacher can
write out the list on the board.
CLOSURE:

The students research their style and bring examples of artists and their work to the next
class. This homework assignment will be assessed. If the students find another style that
is unknown to them, they may use that style and bring their research to show to the
teacher.
