Eye Brow Chakra and Healing N K Srinivasan Ph D
Eye-brow chakra or Ajna chakra is the second chakra fromthe top. It is located between the eye-brows, in a spotbehind in the skull. Hindu women place a dot or 'bindi' inthat region. This chakra is a very powerful chakra, associated withpsychic powers or powers of intuition. This chakra is theseat of 'third eye' depicted in pictures and mythology. This chakra is the one favored by yogis for intensemeditation. Almost all yoga masters and tantric adeptswere encouraged to meditate on this spot ,sometimes byrolling their eyes towards it-- the spot at the root ofthe nose bone. This chakra is a lotus with two petals, the petals areassociated with Shiva and Shakti or Purusha and Prakriti, that is 'Cosmic Force' and 'Nature'.I must add here a caveat: Do not attempt to meditate onthis chakra unless you follow an ascetic life style. InIndia, worship of Ajna chakra which means "Command" chakra,is meant for those who are ascetics and followers of

ascetic orders or renunciates/monks. Yoga masters oftentaught meditation on this chakra only after muchpreparation of the disciple's mind, by controlling theiranger and passions and following the injunctions in 'yama'and 'niyama' [don'ts and do's]as given in Patanjali'sashtanga yoga or eight-part yoga. This chakra is linked to pineal and pituitaryglands--which control other endocrine glands as well. Theexact role of pineal gland is shrouded in mystery. It maybe the seat of intuition and psychic powers. But manyconsider this pineal gland to be the remnant of ourevolution with no particular significance. Future sciencemay reveal more clues about this gland.
 Mythology
Lord Shiva is a great yogi and works out with full powersof Ajan Chakra. Mythical stories relate how when he wishesto destroy a demon or show his anger, he opens his thirdeye and pours out the intense fire. There are quaintstories how he burnt the vicious Manmatha or Lord of Kamaor passion by his fire from the third eye. There is alsothe story how he destroyed a whole city called Tripura byhis sight from the third eye.[There is a north-east statecalled Tripura near Bengal in India.]

Psychic PowersIf
the third eye is so powerful, what use can be made ofit? Besides destructive powers against villains, Ajnachakra is the seat of all psychic powers such asprecognition and bi-location. Great yogis apparentlydemonstrated these powers at times but never as cheapparlor tricks to lure the onlookers as some Babas did ordo nowadays. It was used with great discretion mainly tohelp a genuine devotee of God.Many young yogis are attracted to yoga for the possibleactivation of Ajna chakra and for acquiring psychicpowers. Some yoga teachers may even teach the techniquesfor that ...at least to some of their chelas or disciples.Genuine yogis would always dissuade their disciples fromusing them and advise them to 'give up' the psychic powersthey may attain during the course of yoga practice. Suchpowers are worthless for attaining spiritual liberation.Sri Ramakrishna always spoke against seeking such psychicpowers.
 Mental and Physical aspects
We do not seek the burning power of this chakra as Shivaor Shakti and we do not hanker after psychic powers. Thenwhy should we do meditiation on this chakra? This chakra is close to the seventh chakra or Sahasrara,
