Monday, July 16th, 2012 To Whom It May Concern, My name is Elizabeth Trovall and Im an international arts and culture

journalist very interested in the Arts & Information internship with NPR. As a reporter my emphasis has been covering issues of arts and culture as well as recidivism, politics, education and social justice. Currently, Im working in Belize City, Belize doing freelance documentary work profiling local youth who have discovered their Belizean identity through artistic expression. The violent gang culture in the city especially affects the Belizean youth, making a creative path less alluring. Im trying to capture, as best I can, the struggles and accomplishments of these youth before I return to the United States in early August. Previous to my work in Belize, I reported for two years at KBIA, the NPRaffiliate in Columbia, Missouri. At KBIA I covered the news affecting mid-Missouri, reporting and producing wraps or cut & copies for the daily newscast. I also have produced many in-depth feature radio stories and two-ways for the education, arts and culture, and politics radio news programs. At KBIA I especially focused on cross-cultural stories or stories that involved arts and culture. In addition to my radio work, I have written and reported for various publications in Missouri and abroad. Last summer I worked for Artemisa Noticias as a culture blogger covering the theatre and arts scene in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There I interviewed artgoing porteos about various cultural events and wrote them up in Spanish for Artemisas arts and culture section. I also have experience writing for various online publications such as the Columbia Missourian, Culturemap Austin and the KOMU 8 Goes Green Blog. Through my radio experience, I have also learned to incorporate social media as an important supplement to a news broadcast. For instance, during election coverage last April our newsroom attended several election watch parties and tweeted photos and updates throughout the evening. These tweets and photos were then compiled into an online story using Storify, which provided an alternate narrative for the evenings election coverage. Given the opportunity to work for NPR, I would be comfortable assisting in executing social media campaigns for the Arts & Information Desk with a variety of social media platforms. Ultimately, I am looking for a place to sharpen my storytelling and reporting skills and assist in production of one of the top arts reporting programs in the world. Reporting for NPR, especially on the arts, would be a dream. With my public radio experience and passion for the arts and arts reporting I think I am an ideal fit for this internship. Thank you for your time and I hope to discuss this with you in the not-too-distant future! All my best, Elizabeth Trovall
