ItookthesephotosduringmytripinChina.Ofallmytravelslastyear,Idon'tthinkIeverfeltmorelostthaninthisplaceoftheworld.Ididn’tunderstandanything,thepeople,thelanguage,thesigns.Ijustcouldn’treadamaporarestaurantmenu.MyrelationandunderstandingofBeijinghasthusbeenverysilentandemotional.IfsomeoneweretoaskmewhatIlearntoverthere,IthinkIwouldshowthemthesepictures.Thelight,thetextures,thewayitlooksstaged(butisn’t),andthewayhoweverythinghasitsownutilityandplace....There’sakindofbeautifulsymmetryandcompositionIcouldfindeverywhereinthesehutongsthatlooklikebigchaosatfirstsight,butonceenteredintotheobservationofthings,Irealisedhoweverydetailwasperfectlyorderedandorganised.OfallthestreetshotsItookoverthere,Ithinkthatmy“HutongStillLife”seriesistheonethatreallyshowsmewhoBeijignersreallyare.ThelittleiknowaboutChinastandsinthesefewphotographs.
