Of the three counties in the Tri-County area, Allen, Putnam and Van Wert, Allen is the heaviest populated. As of the 2010 census, the county contained 106,331 citizens. Allen County was founded, along with Putnam and Van Wert, by the legislature in 1820 as part of the Northwest Territory. It was slow to develop, however, and was not organized until 1831. It is bounded on the north by Putnam County and a small section of Van Wert County. On the west, it runs parallel with Van Wert County. Its southern boundary abuts against Auglaize County. Hardin and Hancock counties form its eastern border. The county and its main city, Lima, serve as a center of commerce and entertainment: factories, shopping malls, a county airport, an abundant supply of water from six reservoirs (Delphos-Gillmor Reservoir, Lima Lake, Ferguson Lake, Metzger Lake, Lost Creek and Bresler Reservoir), numerous golf courses, theaters, parks, libraries and museums. John O. Bredeick platted the original town east of the county line in 1845. Ferdinand Bredeick platted a tract on the west side in 1845 and the two towns, as surveyed by Elias Everett, were known as East and West Bredeick. The Hollister, Bliss and Pettit Addition, known as Section Ten, and the village of Howard, platted for Samuel Forrer, followed close upon the enterprise of Bredeicks. Ferdinand Bredeick erected the first house on the village site and the first frame house was erected by Henry Menckhans; Capt. McCune built the first brick house. In 1845, E. N. Morton built the first saw mill, and in 1847 he erected the first grist-mill. Area: About three square miles in Allen and Van Wert counties. Population: 7,101 total as of 2010 census. The village was founded by European settlers in 1832 when they discovered northwest Ohio forest. This settlement was located near Riley Creek, which provided many opportunities for hard-working pioneers. A grist mill was built, as well as a general store and post office. Rich soil yielded abundant crops and the village grew with business and industry. Blufftons strategic location on Interstate-75 in northern Allen County has been a key to its success. Beaverdam lies at the junction of Lincoln Highway and the Dixie Highway. These early highways began in 1914. Currently, Beaverdams economy is dominated by three large truck stops on what is now the junction of Interstate 75 and U.S. Route 30. Until recently, Beaverdam was at the eastern end of the four lane section of US 30. This meant that vehicular traffic going east on the four-lane portion of US 30 that extended from Fort Wayne, Ind., had to exit the four-lane road and shift to a two-lane road. This required the exit be enhanced and the village function was

US 30 is now a continuous four-lane highway in this part of Ohio that by-passes Beaverdam but the significance of the junction as a major fuel stop has not been diminished. Cairo is located at the intersection of what was once the east-west U.S. Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) and the northsouth State Route 65 (Ottawa Road) in the middle of farming country. In the 1970s, Route 30 was upgraded and moved approximately one mile south of Cairo. Now, the east-west street in Cairo is Main Street. Main Street in Cairo was a part of the countrys first coast-to-coast road, the Lincoln Highway. At various times, there were Lincoln Highway markers and monuments along Main Street. The log building located at the northeast corner of Main Street and Route 65 is known locally as the Lincoln Log Cabin. The most distinctive physical feature of Cairo is a painted (white) concrete grain elevator locally known as a bean dryer which is about 150 feet tall. Area: 0.2 square miles Population: 524.

Putnam County, in the northwestern section of Ohio, is bounded on the south by Allen County; the north by Defiance and Henry counties; the east by Hancock County; and the west by Van Wert and Paulding counties. Putnam County lost its best-improved land to Allen County by the Act of Feb. 14, 1848. The thriving towns of Bluffton, Beaverdam, West Cairo and part of Delphos were taken from it. Fifteen townships were formed from the remaining land in the county: Blanchard, Greensburg, Jackson, Jennings, Liberty, Monroe, Monterey, Ottawa, Palmer, Perry, Pleasant, Riley, Sugar Creek, Union and Van Buren. The county was ravaged by many major floods: 1834, 1888, 1913 and again in 2007. Epidemics of typhoid fever, malaria, smallpox, cholera, tuberculosis and diphtheria caused many deaths. The cholera epidemic of 1850 was so severe, the cemetery in Blanchard Township was called Cholera Cemetery. Early settlers built homes near rivers since they were the best-drained, a water source and a means of transportation. Some became small towns that no longer exist, such as Cascade, Farmington, Douglas, Elm Center, Evansville, Franconia, Hartsburg, Montgomeryville (Belmore), Marice City (Continental), Muntana and Pendleton (Pandora). While Henry Leaf built the first home in the county, David Murphy and his family were the first permanent residents. They built along the Blanchard River, a waterway that meanders across the center of the county. General Mad Anthony Wayne was responsible for the first road in the county. It was built in 1794 and connected Fort Recovery to Defiance. Fort Jennings was erected on this road during the War of 1812 by Col. William Jennings and it was the first mail route. Newspapers sprung up quickly in the county. In 1865, the Kalida Sentinel was published. The Putnam County Sentinel was published in Ottawa in 1866; the Putnam County Vidette in Columbus Grove, 1873; the Leipsic Free Press, 1878; Pandora Times, 1899; Continental News Review, 1912; and Ottoville Leader, 1910. The first school began in the county in 1829 along the west side of the Auglaize River. Lewis Schroufe was the teacher. Railroads played a big role in the development of the county. The Baltimore and Ohio came first in 1856, then the Dayton and Michigan. Next came the Clover Leaf (the Toledo, St. Louis and Western Railroad), followed by the Northern Ohio (formerly the New York, Chicago and St. Louis) and the Nickel Plate (the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad). Today, only Conrail and the Norfolk and Southern operate in the county. Agriculture was and is the prime source of income for many. The county contains some of the most fertile soil in the state with natural drainage from its three main rivers: the Auglaize, Ottawa and Blanchard. County Government Commissioners: Vincent T. Cloverdale is a small hamlet located at the junction of the former Clover Leaf and Tangent and the Findlay, Fort Wayne and Western railroads, which ran through in 1891 but no longer do so today. In 1891, E.W. Dimmock had the town surveyed and platted. The village was incorporated in 1902. Early settlers Pope Barbage built the first saloon, Irvin Folles the first home and Joseph Gingrich the first hotel. The town flourished with the advent of the railroads. It contained a tile and saw mill, an elevator, two churches and a grade and parochial school. The town hall was built in 1913 for $3,000. Basically a farming community, Cloverdale is near the Ottawa River as it joins the Auglaize River. State routes 114, 634 and 694 connect the hamlet to the larger towns in the county. General William H. Harrison, commander of the Army of the Northwest in the War of 1812, ordered a string of forts built along the Auglaize River. On Sept. 12, 1812, Col. William Jennings and his Kentucky Volunteers completed a fort in October and named it Fort Jennings to honor the colonel. It was abandoned after the war. The town of Fort Jennings grew around it. Glandorf was founded by Johann Wilhelm Horstmann and six other men from Glandorf, Germany, in 1833. They embarked on the ship Columbus on Sept. 7, 1833 in Amsterdam, landed Nov. 6, 1833 in New York and purchased some land in Putnam County in December. Members of this group were Johann F. Kahle, Wilhelm Glker, Christian Strope, F. Wischmeyer, Friedrich Bredeick and Mathias and Friedrich Bockrath. Kahle bought land at Greensburg approximately 5 miles to the west of Glandorf and named it Mariakamp. Horstmanns land was named Glandorf. Their wives and 10 other families from Glandorf, Germany, followed in 1834. This was just the beginning of further emigration from Glandorf, Germany, to Ohio and other states of the USA. After his death on Feb. 21, 1843, Horstmann bequeathed his land to the community. In 1834, Native Americans controlled the area that is now Ottawa. Then, it was the center of trade for the tribes roaming the forests and gliding down the rivers of the Great Black Swamp. The Blanchard River, flowing east and west, formed a natural waterway along with its contributing streams: Riley and Cranberry creeks, Pike Run and Tawa Run. By 1835, most of the Natives had left the area and the town, named in honor of the Ottawa Nation, was laid out by surveyors Aughenbaugh and Barnett. John and David Cox, C.C. Pomeroy, Bill Galbreath and Michael Row came to set up homes for their families. Area: About four square miles. Population: 4,460 in the 2010 census. Mayor: J. Located southwest of Columbus Grove on the east side of Sugar Creek Township, Vaughnsville was platted in 1847 by D. C. Vaughn. It has a number of fertile farms. In its heyday, it had two general stores, a church, restaurant, creamery and barber shop, a hardware store and two blacksmiths. It was a busy point of trade. The demise of rail service caused the town to lose some businesses and see its growth lessen. The loss of its school system was a blow to the unincorporated villages 300 residents. Students are transported to the Columbus Grove School District.

Van Wert is named for Issac Van Wart, one of the captors of Major John Andre, a British officer who was a spy for American traitor Benedict Arnold, Van Wert has steadily progressed in population, industry and size, while retaining the small-town atmosphere. Van Wert had its beginning when James Watson Riley, George Marsh, and Peter Augenbaugh bought 240 acres in Pleasant Township in 1834. Growth was slow at first because of the Great Black Swamp. Convoy was established as a small hamlet near the edge of the Black Swamp of Northwest Ohio in the 1860s. The Earliest land entries of the township were in the late 1830s. The impetus for growth for the community centered on the building of the railroad through the county. The completion of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne, and Chicago Railroad in 1855 opened transportation to the township. Settlement moved from an area along an old Indian Trail to a place near the railroad and Convoy was formed, being incorporated in 1874. There was now a market to the Midwest, plentiful lumber resources and a way to move the manufactured product. In 1872, there was a stave mill producing 20,000 staves daily. Adjacent to it on the south was a hoopmill making important parts for wooden barrels. Convoy gradually changed from merely a lumbering center and a railroad town to a farming community, becoming the center for the milling of grain and supporting stores and shops. The community has maintained a steady growth due to the longtime residents, as well as the newcomers. The area surrounding Convoy is largely composed of small to medium-sized family-operated farms. Ohio City was platted on March 4-8, 1876, by Butler, Patterson & Company as Van Wert Junction. On June 1, 1882, a vote was taken with 28 for and 11 against to change the name to Enterprise. The name Enterprise cause much confusion to the post office at the time because there was another Enterprise in Pickaway County. Again, the name needed changed. The town council met on June 1, 1890 and a man by the name of Lewis J. Kiggins brought up the subject and asked the rest of the men if they liked Ohio City. The vote was taken and Ohio City became the name. In 1910, Ohio City was a very prosperous town. It had three churches, one union school, two dry goods stores, two hardware stores, one clothing store, two millinery establishments, three hotels, three restaurants, one bakery, four saloons, two shoe shops, one tailor shop, one silversmith shop, one slack barrel factory, one lumber yard, two blacksmith shops, two elevators, one tile factory, one beet dump, two sawmills, one harness shop, one ice-making house and three railroads all using the centrally located Union Depot. Ohio City has seen three bank robberies: in 1925, 1930, and 1996. John William Lambert of Ohio City made Americas first gasoline-powered automobile in 1891, according to a five-year extensive study by L. Scott Bailey, a well-known automobile historian, editor and publisher.

For many centuries the land which is now Wren, OH and the surrounding townships was Indian land. The Miami Tribe, a member of the vast Algonkian language family, ranged over this area. Wren is known for its Ball Park Association which created the first little league team in 1954. It was started through donations from business people, parents and fans. The village of Elgin is located in the southeast corner of Van Wert County at the intersection of State Route 81 and Sands Road. The history of Elgin begins with the organization of York Township. Jonathan Van Eman, John Smith, Jacob Goodwin, and John Keith purchased land in what is now Elgin. It was during this time that the name Yorktown was adopted. However, there existed another Yorktown Post Office, so the name Elgin was chosen. Elgin is presently the second smallest village in the state with a population of 55.

Scott is but a small mark on the map of Ohio. It is located on the Van Wert-Paulding County line. It consists of 535 acres. It was a thriving little town before it received the name of Scott. The facts of history, related below, will include the happenings of a few years before Scott received its charter. These happenings are from 1865 to present. In 1865, the Mapes family cut their way through the forest and settled one miles west of where Scott is now located. In the next few years Bill Knolls family and the Drury family settled near the Mapes cabin. In 1868, James Lehmen came to this area on a hunting trip. He liked this country so well, that in 1870, he brought his family and settled in this area. Soon after, more people came to settle in the land and in 1878, a young newly married man by the name of John Scott brought forty acres of land on the south side of the VW and Paulding County line. In the year of 1881, he moved on his land, cleared it, and built a large frame house for his family among other industrial buildings as well. Founded in the early 1800s by a sea captain named James Riley, the small village of Willshire has a rich history in early Van Wert County. Prior to coming to Ohio from Connecticut, Captain Riley commandeered a sea vessel bound for the West Indies. When his vessel became shipwrecked, he and his crew were taken captive. A man by the name of Willshire paid ransom for Riley and his men. Once freed, Riley never returned to the sea, but instead mapped the original plat of the town on the west bank of the St. Marys and named it in honor of the man who freed him. Willshire has had many business in and around the town such as hardwares, groceries, stone quarries, hotels and mills. Area: 0.4 square miles Population: 463

Venedocia (latitude 40.78N, longitude -84.44W) is located along state route 116 in Van Wert County of Northwest Ohio about 10 miles southeast of the city of Van Wert. The village occupies an area of about 1/4 square mile. Its year 2009 population was estimated at 148. Venedocia was first settled around 1848 and was incorporated in 1897 by immigrants from Wales. Some current residents still remember when the Welsh language was spoken in village homes and businesses. Since 1851, the Allen County Fair has been the premier showcase for agriculture in West Central Ohio. Recreational possibilities in Allen, Putnam and Van Wert counties are varied. With miles of bike trails, extensive fishing areas and many acres of park land, area residents have no trouble finding something to do. Allen County features the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District. Created in 1972, it is a political subdivision of the State of Ohio. The natural areas and preserves provide recreation opportunities such as hiking, fishing, skating, cross-country skiing and other outdoor sports. Consisting of eight parks, each features special educational experiences. Lima features 10 city parks offering bike trails, fishing, ball diamonds, shelterhouses, picnic facilities and more. Allen County is well-known in the state for reservoir fishing. Boats without gasoline-powered motors are allowed on all reservoirs where one can catch walleye, perch, crappie, bluegill, catfish, white bass and largemouth and small-mouth bass. The county has eight golf courses, a hunting preserve and numerous tennis courts. Also in the Allen County area, just over the line in Auglaize County, is Fort Amanda State Park, southwest of Lima on Fort Amanda Road. The park was a former fort, built in 1812, named after Colonel Thomas Poagues wife. It was a stockade used as a refuge by settlers during the War of 1812. The park also has a cemetery, where many early settlers are buried. Picnicking, hiking trails and shelterhouses are available.

Van Wert city features seven parks offering recreation and picnic facilities. Van Wert County hosts year-round events; July 4th festivals feature a parade with celebrations in Fountain Park and the historical museum. Fireworks top the day, beginning at dusk. Putnam County features town parks and many activities. Each county also features its own July 4th celebrations, town celebrations and county fairs. They have several municipal pools and offer daily prices or season tickets. Agerter Road River Access: In Amanda Township, west of Lima on Agerter Road at Auglaize River. Area of 3 acres with shelterhouse, barbecue grills, picnic areas, fishing and canoe and boat landing. Allen County Farm Park: Open by reservation only, is in Bath Township, one mile east of I-75 on SR 81 at Slabtown Road. It has 45 acres and offers a large renovated barn with electricity for reservations. It features a horseshoe court, volleyball court and open play field and is a perfect place to reserve for family reunions or group gatherings.
Cascade Park: Located near Cloverdale in Putnam County on SR 114. It has picnic areas and playground equipment. Cloverdale Community Park: Has playground equipment, picnic areas, a shelter house, a ball diamond and basketball court. Columbus Grove Swimming Pool and Park: 17510 Road 8-P, 419-659-5594; Playground, shelterhouse, sand volleyball court, two horseshoe courts and swimming pool. Dickinson Park: Airport Avenue, Van Wert, has a tot play area and open play area. Fort Jennings Community Park: It is the site of the annual park carnival in June. The park has two tennis courts, two ball diamonds, one gazebo, four shelterhouses and playground equipment. A co-ed softball tournament is held in conjunction with the park carnival. Pony League baseball, high school softball and baseball and other activities are held there. Fountain Park: Main and Jefferson streets, Van Wert, has summer concerts in the bandstand beginning the end of May. Garfield Park: South Clay Street, Delphos, has one basketball court, one tennis court and playground equipment. Six soccer fields are adjacent to the park. Heritage Park: It is in Shawnee Township, south of Lima on Reed Road and South Dixie Highway. It has 81 acres with two reservable shelters, a large picnic area, a one-acre pond offering fishing and skating, two-mile hiking and crosscountry ski trails and a physical fitness trail. McLean Teddy Bear Park: Located in Bath Township, one mile northeast off SR 81 on North Dixie Highway in Allen County. This park has 55.5 acres and features two shelters, a large picnic area, two ponds for fishing and skating, 2-mile hiking and cross-country skiing trails and 1/2-mile Braille Discovery Trail. Little League diamonds, a tennis court, shelterhouse with kitchen, a basketball court, a horseshoe court, a shuffleboard court and playground equipment. Various events are held at the parks facilities. Ottoville Community Park: Labor Day weekend is the annual Park Festival. The park has two ball diamonds, one tennis court, two shelterhouses, playground equipment and concession stand. Activities include softball leagues, childrens soccer games and little league, pony league and high school baseball. Smiley Park: Leeson and Woodland avenues, Van Wert, has four ball diamonds, two basketball courts, two beach volleyball courts, three tennis courts, numerous picnic pavilions and a fishing pond. Spencer Township Park: Is located on Wisher Drive near Spencerville, has picnic areas, three shelterhouses, playground and two tennis courts. Spencerville Village Park: Located on Second St., has two tennis courts, a shelterhouse, playground equipment and four horseshoe courts. Spencerville Wellside Park: Off North St. by Miami-Erie Canal, has three ball diamonds and a concession stand. Stadium Park: 1000 Park Ave., Delphos has a swimming pool, six tennis courts, two basketball courts, two sand volleyball courts, football stadium, two baseball diamonds, four softball diamonds, one shelter house, playgrounds and a 159-foot water slide. There is also a new skatepark in the park. Waterworks Park: Third Street, Ottawa, has two tennis courts, Boy Scout and Girl Scout buildings and an enclosed shelterhouse. Ottawa also has two other playground parks: one on Taft Street and one on Fourth Street.
