FMMS PTSA MINUTES

Floyd Middle Magnet School

Thursday, March 1, 2012

The FMMS Band performed a prelude for our meeting. The meeting was called to order by Deena Weston at 6:05 PM. In attendance PTSA Officers, Principal Johnson, parents, teachers and students Secretarys Report: The minutes from the December 1, 2011 meeting were read and approved. Budget Report The Treasurers Report was presented and reviewed by members present and was approved. Ms. Fyffe will get $2,000 for science equipment for the science department. Ms. Gorman will receive thermometers for 6thgrade classes. Ms. Davis requested math upgrades she will need $6,400 to purchase navigators to use with her existing Smart Board.

COMMITTEE REPORTS Membership: Kathy Shirley, Chairperson-There are 562 members. Although National PTSA considers this 100%, it only represents families from 53% of our 504 students. The deadline to join is March 1, 2011. Mardi Gras Dance Report: Heather Pate, Chairperson-There were 200 students and 20 to 30 parents present. They raised $1,090.52 for PTSA. Panther Wear: Sarah Hall, Chairperson- This has produced a profit of $2,804.00 so far. There is a Spring T-Shirt available to order. Order forms went home today. The shirt was a combination of the 5 designs from the Design Competition. FREEmoney Committee: Susan Yost- FREEmoney flyers went home last week and were made available tonight. The flyers provided information for Box Tops, Coke Rewards, Publix, Office Depot, Campbells Soup, etc. Teacher Appreciation Week: Kathy Shirley- Teacher Appreciation week will be May 7th -11th. Volunteers were encouraged to contact Kathy. Deena Weston: Upcoming Events o o Spirit Night-March 22, 2012 at Zoes from 4 PM to 7 PM Movie Night- April 20, 2012 time TBA Possible movie selections o A Night at the Museum Jurassic Park

Selection of Nominating Committee for PTSA Officers Election of new officers will take place on May 10, 2012

PTSA bylaws for selecting/nominating PTSA Officers were read and made available for members.

The floor was open for volunteers to be a part of the nominating Committee. Amie Helms, Eva Luckie and Jackie Lewis volunteered. Members present unanimously voted for the all three volunteers. They will speak with Deena after the meeting adjourns.

Bear 5th Graders to visit on March 6 and McMillian 5th Graders on March 7. Volunteers were asked to sign up at the back table.

Trish Robinson, Brew Tech PTSA President spoke and encouraged 8th grade parents to sign up to volunteer and/become a PTSA Officer. All offices were open.

Ms. Moncrief: A video created by Career Tech was played for members. The PSA will be entered in the Tech Competition that will be on May 1st and 2nd.

Principal Report Mr. Johnson gave a reported o FMMS has received 450 applications outside our feeder schools and the selection process will begin next week o Tours were done through the month of February o The High School night for 8th graders was very informative. There were representatives from all MPS high schools. o Random Acts of Kindness was last week and FMMS collected dog supplies to donate for Human Society. o Black History Month Events Door Competition Maxwell/Gunter AFB African American Heritage Committee selected FMMS for a program, presented on February17th. Students viewed the movie Red Tails a documentary about the Tuskegee Airmen The FMMS School Program was presented on February 24th. Guest speakers were FMMS Alumni, Quesha Starkes, who is the Principal at BTW and FMMS Parent, Tonya Terry, who is a News Anchor at WSFA. Social Studies Projects are due Tuesday, March 6. 6th and 7th grade project boards were available for viewing tonight. o Athletics at Floyd Declared sports last week and we are on track to have sports next year. We will have every sport except football (girls volley ball, girls and boys basketball, soccer, tennis, track, etc.). Progress Reports will go home tomorrow Three weeks to improve grades the 9 weeks end March 23rd Added 0.5 weight to advance classes-You will see two GPAs on report cards (Magnet weighted and un-weighted) 8th grade parents- Brew Tech and LAMP will look at weighted GPA. Mr. Johnson will talk with BTWs principal to see if she will consider looking at the weighted GPA. o Spring Break- March 26 to March 30 Next Meeting Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 6:00 PM, school cafeteria FMMS Band, directed by Mr. Woodson performed. Meeting adjourned at 6:50 PM
