Introduction to OLED DisplaysDesign Guide for Active MatrixOLED (AMOLED) Displays
last updated 22 May 2008
Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED) is a new display technologythat is rapidly becoming viable for many applications.
It has some undoubted benefits over competingtechnologies.
4D holds no responsibility or liability for the accuratenessof the information and how it is applied to any design.
What is an OLED?
OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) is a self light-emitting technology composed of a thin, multi-layeredorganic film placed between an anode and cathode. Incontrast to LCD/TFT technology, OLED does notrequire a backlight.
How does an OLED emit light?
OLED’s basic structure consists of organic materialspositioned between the cathode and the anode, whichis composed of electric conductive transparent IndiumTin Oxide (ITO). The organic materials compose amulti-layered thin film, which includes the HoleTransporting Layer (HTL), Emission Layer (EML) andthe Electron Transporting Layer (ETL). By applying theappropriate electric voltage, holes and electrons areinjected into the EML from the anode and the cathode, respectively. The holes and electrons combine insidethe EML to form excitons, after whichelectroluminescence occurs. The transfer material, emission layer material and choice of electrode are thekey factors that determine the quality of OLEDcomponents.www.4dsystems.com.au
