Here we are in the midst of a draught and 90 degree temperature for the next few days and things are heating up at the Lisle Chamber. We are participants in the Eyes to the Skies Festival and many of you are volunteering/or volunteered to help. We appreciate that very much because it helps us to provide more scholarships for graduating high school students next May. Several Chamber members are sponsors for the fest including Navistar as lead sponsor but also Lisle Savings Bank, Janor Sports, The Sign Authority, Hilton Lisle/ Naperville, Arbor Printing, Evviva Bar and Eatery, Old Second Bank, and a special shout out to Jewel who came through in a big way. Jeannine Flureurant, the Lisle Store Director deserves special recognition for all she does. Besides the Chamber the Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, Partners for Parks, and Lisle Education Foundation all of which are chamber members are affiliates of the organization. We look forward to a great weekend and the balloons already launched on Friday morning so the fest is off to a good start. If you are not volunteering please attend with your friends and family. If you have children you will be very impressed with the childrens area. Thanks to Joe Straka and PACT for a nice Business After Hours at the end of the month. PACT impacts 6000 clients per year so it is a very impressive organization. They have a wine event on August 2nd at 7 Bridges so try to make that. Speaking of 7 Bridges, that is where we are holding our golf outing again this year on July 24th. Sponsorship opportunities are still available and we are looking for your foursome or individual registration. After July 13th the registration fees go up so act quickly. We have a few new twists this year including the yellow ball and a two putt maximum. Finally, dont forget to support the DuPage Hounds. Contact us if you need tickets we might have some freebies. Also the Neighbors magazine rep Paula Gleason is looking for advertisers. You would do well to be included. Happy Independence Day! The heat is on! Im really starting to believe this whole global warming thing has some legs to it. Hope that everyone is staying cool and safe as it looks like we may be poised to have a record setting summer. So much is happening in our community right now, on all levels. The month is bookended by two great events: Eyes to the Skies and the Chambers Annual Golf Outing! Theres a lot going on in between and your Chamber is looking forward to a great month. Before looking forward to the month ahead, I did want to take a moment to comment on a couple of events that took place in June. On June 21st, the DuPage Hounds Baseball team hosted a night for chamber members. This was a multi-chamber event, but I can say without question that Lisle faces made up most of the crowd. It was great to see! If you attended, you may have noticed that the chamber had a table set up, as we continue to stay actively visible in the community to continue to strengthen our membership. Our multi-talented president, Tom, really took staying visible to heart, as he sang the 7th inning stretch at the game on top of one of the dugouts! Im sure those who were there would agree that he may have found his true calling. The Lyric Opera House awaits! Thanks to the entire DuPage Hounds organization for hosting us. I encourage you to check out a Hounds game, as it is a low cost, convenient, and fun way to spend an evening with your family! In June, the Chamber Board filled a vacant board position after applicants were allowed to submit applications for the position. Please join me in welcoming Diane Merna to the Chamber Board. This isnt Dianes first go around on the Chambers board and we look forward to her input and experience as we continue to strive to provide membership with the absolute best programming and business opportunities that we can. Getting right to work we are looking to form a new committee dedicated specifically to membership programming and experience. Diane has volunteered to chair this group! If you are interested in helping shape and improve Chamber events, or apply your creative touch to innovative new ideas to positively affect the chamber membership experience, we would love to have you on board and look forward to hearing from you. As mentioned, the Annual Golf Outing has arrived and we are very excited! On July 24th we hit Seven Bridges golf course for what has become a truly remarkable event. Our participation has grown three years in a row and we are expecting yet another impressive year. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved whether you are a golfer or not. Sponsorships, foursomes, or just dinner, we would love to see you at our social event of the summer. Not going to make it, but want to participate? We are also very interested in quality silent auction items and raffle prizes for our post-golf dinner. As was the case last year, golfers will have a shot at a Free car and also a chance to win $1,000,000 in our hole-in-one challenges. I look forward to seeing all of those who can attend and thank you all for your participation! I hope July is a prosperous and successful month for your business! Legislative/Government Affairs UpdateKeith Tice

Illinois Legislative Update Pension Reform Business Unfinished. The desperately needed reform of Illinois pension system did not happen in the Spring Legislative Session. Illinois has five pension systems with aggregate unfunded liabilities of over $83 billion. Bipartisan negotiations to reform these systems came very close but fell apart at the last minute over a disagreement whether or not to shift pension costs for retired downstate and suburban teachers from the State to the local school districts. For reasons no one can recall (most pension systems were created in the early 1950s), property taxpayers in the city of Chicago pay the employer pension costs for the Chicago Public Schools (approximately $190 million annually) while suburban and downstate school districts have their employer pension costs paid by the State (approximately $800 million annually). There is a substantial concern by downstate and suburban legislators that shifting these costs to their local school districts will significantly increase property taxes. On the other hand, legislators representing taxpayers in the city of Chicago resent paying their own plus contributing to the payments of the suburban and downstate school systems. How this is resolved remains to be seen. Talks between the top 4 legislative leaders and Governor Quinn continued in June with little progress. The Governor is still talking about a Special Session this summer to focus on pensions. U.S. Supreme Court Rules for Individual Mandate in Affordable Care Act. Many of the details remain to be worked out in implementing the balance of the Affordable Care Act following the high courts June 28 ruling. The high court said the federal government cannot force the states to cooperate in a broad expansion of Medicaid. This expansion was anticipated to provide health care for 16 to 17 million people, half the people who would gain care coverage under the law. According to the law as written, anyone who earns up to 133 percent of the federal poverty rate would be covered. The law sought to force the states to add those people to their Medicaid rolls. If a state refused to comply, it could lose all of its federal Medicaid funds. This part of the law was deemed unconstitutional. Twenty-six states challenged the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act on the grounds that the individual mandate and the Medicaid requirements were unconstitutional. With so many states struggling to pay the cost of Medicaid now, theres a distinct possibility many states will opt out of the Medicaid expansion. . Ambassador SPOTLIGHT Bob Lampkin

A member of the Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce, Bob Lampkin became an Ambassador in September 2011 and also serves on the Board of Directors. He initially pursued an Ambassador position purely for the networking opportunity, but soon found that it meets another need of his as well. He describes that need of service over self, To be of service and make friends among like-minded people is a reward in and of itself. Bob enjoys being in business and around business people. He often tries to focus on facilitating someone elses success, which is how he finds win-win opportunities. As the president and CEO of E.M. Advisors, Inc., Bobs primary duties vary, but he is currently recruiting, training, planning and enjoying his time spent helping people. Although he is relatively new to financial services, he has had eight years of experience in business as the President and CEO of a language translation and media development company where he serviced accounts for two dozen Fortune 500 clients. In January of 2012, Bob began this enterprise and within six months, had agents contracted in Rockford, Hoffman Estates and Chicago. Outside of work, Bob resides with his wife, Traci whom is a long time teacher and resident of Lisle. He enjoys spending time riding bikes, hiking, camping, and fishing with his two sons, Robert and Ben. Bob and Traci also enjoy reading and volunteering at the Feed My Starving Children organization. He leaves us with this favorite quote Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared Buddha.

Trash & Treasures

The 29th Annual Trash & Treasures event returned to downtown Lisle on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Vendors were quite pleased with the turn-out of local customers that came through commuter parking lot. Tom Althoff, President & CEO of the Lisle Area Chamber said that the Chamber took over the event in 1999 when the Downtown Business Council became a subcommittee of the chamber. The vendors of the French Market were also pleased with the number of shoppers that came to downtown Lisle looking for treasures. Watch for the Trash & Treasures event in June of 2013.
