The dosimeter is contained in a white PTFE cylinder with a slightly roundededge. A thin metal backplate has a small loop, useful when affixing a wrist-strap or a safety pin. The dosimeter is 36mm wide and 12mm thick. The docking cradle is a rectangular plastic box, measuring 140mm x 65mm x28mm. There is a USB port at one end, and a round hole on top for docking adosimeter.
Interaction during deployment
During deployment, dosimeters have nointeraction with the user, except viavisual inspection of a red LED. This LEDdisplays a “heartbeat,” or indication ofoperation. The brief flash is easilyobservable in a darkened room. The interval between heartbeatsdepends on the operating mode. Whenthe dosimeter badge is in active mode, the flash occurs every three seconds. When the dosimeter is sleeping, theflash occurs every five seconds.
Each dosimeter runs on a 3-volt coin cell battery. Average currentconsumption is approximately 5uA, and battery life is expected to be morethan twelve months.
Each dosimeter has 2,162,160 bytes of available data storage. Eachmeasurement requires two bytes. Therefore, a dosimeter can store 1,081,080individual measurements. Measuring at ten-second intervals for twelve hoursper day, it would take eight months to fill the memory. If a string of UV measurements are close to zero, then they are grouped andrepresented as a single value in memory. Up to 2048 such measurementscan be grouped as one. This further extends the potential memory.
