This is the official guidebook for the 2012 Global Studies, Peace and Leadership Summer Seminar is a 5 week intensive international program hosted by Hiroshima Jogakuin University. Students from across Asia and North America will experience virtual classroom preparation before embarking on a journey through Asia; comprised of a 1 week Peace Seminar and home-stays in Japan, followed by a 10-day social justice service learning project with partnering NGOs based in India and Thailand.

I sincerely would like to welcome you to Hiroshima Jogakuin University for the 2012 Global Studies, Peace andLeadership Summer Seminar. We have prepared a wonderful program for all of you, and I assure you that thisopportunity will remain a lifelong experience.
I would also like to express my deep appreciation to President Ruth Knox of Wesleyan College, President Caroline Whitson of Columbia College inthe United States and President Elizabeth Charles of Isabella Thoburn College in India for sending their students to the Global Studies, Peace andLeadership Summer Seminar- an intentionally sequenced format comprised of a virtual classroom, the Wesley Foundation Sponsored Peace Seminarand Fieldwork in India and Thailand.In terms of your expectations, we have many outstanding lecturers who will give us profound insights to your academic interests. We will alsoprepare an international night, a film night and also a cultural night to expose and celebrate our multi-cultural environment. We are excited to have thefirst ever student based media team to capture and share these experiences with the world through our online journal that is launching with theseminar-
The Global Voice.
 During the Peace Seminar, with the support of President Ii and Professor Shimazaki of Kobe College we will have contemporary dance teamperforming on the first day from Kobe College for the opening event. I am very grateful for both President Ii and Professor Shimazaki of Kobe Collegewho are ensuring that the opening of the Peace Seminar is an exciting one. Also please note that we have arranged home-stays with local Japanesefamilies for a few of the evenings- many of our Global Studies in English students are looking forward to hosting their international counterparts.Needless to say, the main program in Hiroshima is to attend the Memorial Peace Ceremony that will be held in the Peace Park with theRepresentatives of various countries and Governor and Mayor of Hiroshima as well as thousands of Hiroshima Citizens in the morning of August 6

Summer Seminar

The university has ahistorically rich legacy and was founded in 1886by devout Christians with a strong desire todevelop women’s education in Hiroshima.Today there are over 1800 students enrolledand 13 majors offered in the Department of Liberal Arts- including Global Studies in English(GSE).
