Ron Johnson Biography
Ron was born on May 15, 1947 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Fourmonths later his family moved to Salisbury, North Carolina. Among his earlyrecollections of growing up, was that of becoming an artist. At an early age, he was attracted to such artists as John Nagy, Michelangelo,Da Vinci and Dr. Seuss. On one occasion there was a special exhibit of smalldrawings, paintings and prints at the local library. Viewing this exhibit wasRon’s first experience in seeing “real art” first hand. Ron began his collegestudies at East Carolina University. The U.S. Navy interrupted his collegeeducation in 1968. Ron was stationed ine in in Nea Makri, Greece until hisrelease in 1972. He would use his spare time drawing, and painting. In 1973,he was accepted into the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he continued hisartistic studies in printmaking and illustration. In 1978, Ron graduated from the University of Cincinnati with an MFA. Aftergraduation he became an instructor at the Art Academy. In 1980, Ron openedhis own graphics and illustration company. For the next twenty years Roncreated commercial art, while learning more and more about practical design, illustration and photography on a professional level. When personal computersstarted taking over the design world, he began to long for the days where hecould express himself with brushes, paints, pens and ink. This tactile worldhad more to offer than pushing a mouse around the computer screen. As a side, Ron kept teaching himself how to paint, particularly with oils. Itwasn’t until 1987 that he began to seriously think of changing his career tobecome a full time artist. He began to prepare a group of paintings to honorhis parents 50th wedding anniversary. His first oil painting show was exhibitedat the Waterworks Gallery in his hometown of Salisbury, North Carolina. In1993 a PBS instructional “plein art”show featuring John Stobart, jumpstarted Ron into doing “plein air”painting. In the next several years,Ron produced over a thousandpaintings. By 1995 Ron was anestablished painter.
