AAMCO DEXRON-III/MERCON ATF is a premium lubricant for car and truck automatic transmissions and other applications that require an automatic transmission fluid satisfying either General Motors DEXRONIII, or Fords MERCON ATF specifications. It is recommended for automatic transmissions in General Motors and American Motors (now part of DaimlerChrysler Corporation) cars, vans, and light trucks, and for certain imported cars such as Audi, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Opel, Renault, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Mercedes Benz that specify a DEXRON-type fluid. AAMCO DEXRON-III/MERCON ATF is recommended for automatic transmissions in all Ford Motor Company vehicles where MERCON ESP-M2C166H or ESP-M2C138CJ fluids are specified. For Ford automatic transmissions requiring M2C33-F (Type F) fluids, AAMCO ATF Type F is recommended. AAMCO DEXRON-III/MERCON ATF meets the transmission fluid requirements of Allison automatic transmissions and other heavy-duty equipment requiring a DEXRON-II, -IIE or -III fluid. It is approved against the Allison C-4 specification and therefore can be used in Allison Powershift transmissions or other torque converter systems that specify this type fluid. It is also recommended for Caterpillar TO-2 applications and certain heavy-duty transmissions, including ZF, Voith, Renk Doromat, and Mercedes Benz. AAMCO DEXRON-III/MERCON ATF also is suitable for power steering units where the manufacturer recommends a DEXRON or MERCON fluid. Many car makers, however, require the use of their own power steering fluids. AAMCO DEXRON-III/MERCON ATF also can be used as the lubricating oil in several types of rotary air compressors under certain service conditions. Its low-temperature properties and resistance to oxidation are important factors in meeting the requirements of this service.

TERESSTIC N EP is a technological breakthrough that combines the outstanding high-temperature performance and detergency of Teresstic N paper machine oil with the 60-lb Timken performance of a premium gear oil. Teresstic N EP can be used both to lubricate the wet and dry ends, where excellent detergency and thermal stability are critical, and the press section, where EP gear oil qualities are needed to protect heavily loaded components, such as the extended nip presses, crown control roll hydraulic systems, and integral gear systems. In addition to EP protection comparable to a high-quality gear oil, Teresstic N EP exceeds conventional gear oils in resistance to oxidative and thermal breakdown and passivity to catalytic copper. That means longer lubricant life and minimal tendency to form the acids, deposits, sludge, and varnish that can accelerate wear and shorten equipment life. Additionally, the versatility of Teresstic N EP permits cost-efficient consolidation of lubricant inventories and reduces the possibility of lubricant misapplication. The three grades of Teresstic N EP meet or exceed the requirements of the major paper machine manufacturers in anti-wear and EP performance, oxidation and thermal stability, detergency rust protection, demulsiblity, and filterability.

GREASES
RAILROAD BEARINGS ARAPEN RB 320 is a long-life grease developed for the roller bearings of railroad car journals where no provision is made for in-service relubrication. It is fully approved against Specification M-942-98 of the Association of American Railroads for Journal Roller Bearing Grease for non-field-lubricated bearing applications. It is used by major manufacturers of railroad journal bearings as the factory-fill lubricant. Arapen RB 320 has high oxidation stability and is highly resistant to chemical deterioration that might otherwise produce acids or deposits that are detrimental to long bearing life. It has exceptional ability to withstand shear, i.e., retain consistency after prolonged working, as in the churning action of an anti-friction bearing. Arapen RB 320 has been shown to have little effect on elastomeric seal materials, thus maintaining good seal performance, a significant requirement for shop-to-shop wheel service. Largely because of its special calcium-lithium-soap base, Arapen RB 320 has good heat resistance and a high resistance to deterioration in the presence of water. It is inhibited to give protection against rusting.

CONSTANT VELOCITY JOINTS EXXON CVJ GREASE is formulated with a state-of-the art polyurea thickener and a high-quality mineral oil. Exxon has specifically fined-tuned the polyurea thickener system to meet the challenging lubrication requirements of automotive constant velocity joint applications. The thickener system allows the consistency of the grease to soften in a controlled manner when subjected to mechanical shearing forces such as the forces found in the rolling and sliding metal-to-metal contacts of a constant velocity joint. This controlled softening allows Exxon CVJ Grease to flow into the multiple contact points of a constant velocity joint more effectively, without resulting in excessive oil separation. Exxon CVJ Grease provides excellent resistance to oxidation, even at peak operating temperatures as high as 350F. The excellent thermal stability of this grease is a result of the high-performance additive package as well as the inherent antioxidant characteristics of the polyurea thickener itself. Exxon CVJ Grease is compatible with a wide range of common elastomers found in constant velocity joint applications. It is compatible with silicone, Neoprene, Hytrel polyester, and nitrile based elastomers. The performance of Exxon CVJ Grease has been proven in automotive constant velocity joints used in the drive train of front-wheel-drive automobiles. Exxon CVJ Grease may also be used in the Cardin joints of rear wheel drive automobiles.

LIDOK EP 2 Moly is a multi-purpose, lithium-base NLGI No. 2 grease recommended for general industrial applications. It contains an extreme-pressure additive for increased load carrying ability. It contains molybdenum disulfide (also known as moly and MoS2), which enhances the anti-friction properties of the grease under boundary lubrication conditions. Lidok EP 2 Moly is dark gray and has a smooth, buttery texture. It is water resistant, has good oxidation and mechanical stability, and protects against corrosion. ApplicationsLidok EP 2 Moly is suitable for plain bearings and gears. It also can be used in rolling contact bearings, but is not generally recommended for high-precision rolling contact bearings because of the possibility of molybdenum disulfide building up in the clearances. Lidok EP 2 Moly has applications in the construction, mining, and farming industries. In off-highway trucks and other vehicles, it provides good service in bucket pins, rack and pinion gearing, fifth wheels, steering gears, etc. Advantages of the Molybdenum AdditiveMolybdenum disulfide offers particular advantages under boundary lubrication conditions, especially where sliding or vibrating action pushes the grease away from the contacting surfaces. It provides a measure of protection against fretting wear and is therefore recommended where this phenomenon is a problem, as in splined shafts, pivot pins, fifth wheels, and other parts subjected to oscillating or sliding motion. Where relubrication is infrequent, molybdenum disulfide provides extended lubrication protection.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

The health and safety of people who handle and use Exxon products are of vital interest and concern to us. Most Exxon products are regarded as generally safe. As with all petroleum products, however, excessive and prolonged contact or improper handling may result in adverse effects. Below are general health and safety precautions for handling petroleum products. For more details and product-specific information, we urge you to obtain and read carefully the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each Exxon product handled to ensure that employees and users fully understand appropriate precautionary information relating to safe use. Material Safety Data Sheets for Exxon products are available on the web at www.exxon.com, by calling Fax-on-Demand at 1-613-228-1467, by calling the MSDS Order Desk at 1-856-224-4644, or by contacting your local Exxon representative. ExxonMobil 24-Hour Emergency Line (Call Collect): 1-609-737-4411 in the U.S. FIRE HAZARDS Many petroleum products are highly volatile and flammable and must be handled with extreme caution to prevent fire or explosion. These include a few extra light viscosity lubricants and many solvents. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has classified products with flash points below 37.8C (100F) as flammable, and products with flash points at or above 37.8C and below 93.3C (200F) combustible. Products with flash points above 93.3C (200F), when used for their intended purposes, are not classified as fire hazards in accordance with OSHA (29 CFR 1910.1200). Petroleum products should not be stored or handled near sources of ignition, such as heat, sparks, open flame, sources of static electricity, or near strong oxidants such as chlorine (including swimming pool chemicals) and concentrated oxygen. WARNING: Empty containers retain residue (liquid and/or vapor) and can be dangerous. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose such containers to heat, flame, sparks, static electricity, or other sources of ignition which may cause them to explode. Do not attempt to clean since residue is difficult to remove, and even a trace of remaining material constitutes an explosive hazard. Empty drums should be completely drained, properly bunged, and promptly returned to a drum reconditioner. All other containers should be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner and in accordance with governmental regulations.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

(continued)

HEALTH HAZARDS Health studies have shown that many petroleum hydrocarbons pose potential human health risks that may vary from person to person. As a precaution, exposure to liquids, vapors, and mists of petroleum products should be minimized. InhalationHealth specialists have established maximum concentration levels for hydrocarbon vapors in air to which nearly all workers may be safely exposed. Where applicable, the levels established for Exxon products are indicated in Material Safety Data Sheets. Prolonged breathing of hydrocarbon vapor concentrations in excess of prescribed limits may result in light-headedness, dizziness, and nausea. Inhalation of higher vapor concentrations may produce dizziness, headache, respiratory tract irritation, and unconsciousness. If a person is overcome by vapor, remove the individual from exposure at once and call a physician. If breathing is irregular or has stopped, start resuscitation and administer oxygen, if available. To avoid inhalation of excessive concentrations of hydrocarbons, store and handle highly volatile petroleum products such as solvents and solvent-cutback products only in open, well-ventilated areas. In special cases of indoor handling, e.g., laboratories, products always should be handled under vented hoods powered with explosion-proof motors. Under certain circumstances, sulfur compounds in hot asphalt may form the toxic gas hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Prolonged breathing of 50 to 100 ppm of H2S will produce eye and respiratory tract irritation, headache, nervousness, and nausea. At higher concentrations of H2S (700 to 1000 ppm) only a few breaths of the gas may lead to unconsciousness and could be fatal. To avoid breathing excessive concentrations of H2S, personnel should stand upwind of tank and bulk transport compartments containing asphalt, keep their faces at least two feet from compartment openings, and avoid breathing vapors when opening hatches and dome covers. Use respiratory equipment where necessary. IngestionAs a general precaution, if petroleum products are ingested, keep the person calm. DO NOT induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately, identifying the product and approximate amount swallowed. While petroleum products are generally not highly toxic, solvents and light oils with viscosities below 20.5 centistokes (100 SUS) at 37.8C (100F) pose a distinct hazard of being aspirated into the lungs and causing chemical pneumonitis. This is a delayed effect, which may not occur for days. Because of the risk of accidental swallowing, petroleum products should never be siphoned by mouth.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

(continued)

Skin ContactProlonged or repeated contact of petroleum oils, greases, or solvents with the skin can cause skin irritation and dermatitis. In case of skin contact, wash skin thoroughly with soap and warm water. A waterless hand cleaner and a soft skin brush can be used to help remove oils and greases. For certain products, dry-wiping is advised before using waterless hand cleaner. Refer to the product MSDS for specific instructions and precautions. Promptly remove petroleum-soaked clothing and launder before re-use. If a petroleum product contacts the eyes, flush the eyes with fresh water until the irritation subsides; if irritation persists, call a physician. If prolonged contact with petroleum products is unavoidable, wear chemical-resistant gloves, apron, splash goggles, and other protective clothing. High-pressure injection of grease through the skin (a grease gun injury) can cause serious delayed damage to soft tissues. Hydraulic oil under high pressure can cause similar injury. Regardless of the size or appearance of the wound, a physician should be contacted immediately, as treatment may require surgical intervention. Chronic Health EffectsAlthough not the case with many highly or well refined petroleum oils, studies with laboratory animals have shown that prolonged exposure to certain petroleum products can cause cancer and other chronic health effects. Some petroleum oils and distillates have caused skin cancer in mice following skin painting tests over the animals lifetime. In similar tests, used motor oil also has caused skin cancer. Carefully check the product MSDS for such warning information. Inhalation of the vapors of most non-aromatic solvents has been shown to cause kidney damage in male rats. The normal hexane (n-hexane) component of hexane solvent is known to cause a form of motor nerve damage called peripheral polyneuropathy in humans.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

ADDITIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS You can protect yourself from petroleum-related hazards by exercising care and common sense in the handling of petroleum products. Appropriate engineering controls, work practices, and personal protection should be used to minimize skin contact and to keep exposure by inhalation as far below the recommended occupational exposure limit as is reasonably practical. Additional important health and safety information on any Exxon product is provided in the Exxon Material Safety Data Sheet, available on the web at www.exxon.com, by calling Fax-on-Demand at 1-613-228-1467, by calling the MSDS Order Desk at 1-856-224-4644, or by contacting your local Exxon representative.

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDSs)

Why Is a Material Safety Data Sheet Important to You? Many petroleum products carry inherent health, environmental, and safety hazards. Careful attention to the precautions and emergency procedures outlined in the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) can protect you and your co-workers from these risks. What Is an MSDS? An MSDS is a publication designed to provide the user of a Exxon petroleum product with detailed, comprehensive, and up-to-date health and safety information relating to that product. There is an individual MSDS for each Exxon product. The MSDS information is based on requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Regulation 29 CFR 1910.1200, and the data presented are consistent with OSHA guidelines for informational content. These data are derived from various sources, including Exxon testing laboratories, independent research organizations, and raw material suppliers. What Kind of Information Does an MSDS Provide? An MSDS typically contains the following types of information: Physical data on the product (e.g., boiling range, vapor pressure) The nature and degree of health, environmental, and safety hazards associated with the product Precautionary guidelines for proper and safe handling of the product in order to avoid fire, explosion, and acute and chronic health hazards Emergency procedures in the event of fire, spill, or excessive exposure to the product by skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation How to Obtain an MSDS We urge every user of Exxon products to obtain the appropriate MSDS. To obtain a sheet on any Exxon product visit us on the web at www.exxon.com, call Fax-on-Demand at 1-613-228-1467 for a copy faxed immediately, call the MSDS Order Desk at 1-856-224-4644, or

ADDITIVES FOR PREMIUM LUBRICATING OILS

APPENDICES

Many kinds of chemical additive agents are used in the manufacture of high-quality oils. They are either single-purpose materials or multipurpose materials. Listed below are descriptions of some commonly used additive types. Adhesive Agent The tacky, stringy materials which help form and retain uniform films on metal surfaces. Antiwear Agent Such materials adsorb or concentrate on metal surfaces to form films which minimize the direct metal-to-metal contact. The name applies to materials which enhance the antiwear characteristics of petroleum oils to permit loadings of double or triple that which can be handled by straight petroleum oils. These materials are non-staining and non-corrosive. Defoamant When added to fluids, defoamants will promote rapid breakup of foam bubbles by weakening the oil films between the foam bubbles. Demulsifier Assists the natural ability of the oil to separate rapidly from water; helps inhibit rust.. Detergent When added to oils, these neutral-to-overbased (high alkalinity), metallic detergents which carry extra neutralization and cleanliness power, can reduce the level of acidic materials generated when burning high-sulfur fuel, and help keep the engine clean. Dispersant Suspends organic deterioration products in the lubricant to minimize their precipitation as harmful deposits. Extreme Pressure Agent These materials are more active than antiwear agents. They react with metal surfaces to form relatively oil insoluble surface films which reduce friction, control wear and prevent surface damage which could result from heavy loads and/or high temperatures. Automotive hypoid gears require lubricants which contain very active extreme pressure agents. Friction Modifier A general category of materials that are used to alter the frictional characteristics of a lubricant. They may be used to increase the lubricity or slipperiness where coefficient of friction may be important and to improve fuel economy/energy conservation. They may be used to reduce stick-slip or chatter in wet clutch applications. Oxidation Inhibitor Peroxide decomposers destroy the precursor of radical sources by converting the peroxides into harmless compounds. Chain stoppers interrupt the chain reaction between oxygen and hydrocarbon radicals to prevent or slow the formation of acidic materials, propagated materials, and sludges. Metal deactivators retard the oxidation-promoting catalytic effect of metals in a lubricating system. The metal surfaces or particles are covered by the agent which acts as a barrier to prevent the catalytic effect. The most catalytically active metal is copper; the second is lead, and the third is iron. Some additive agents function as chain stoppers, peroxide decomposers, and/or metal deactivators. Pour Point Depressant Improves the low-temperature fluidity of mineral oils and reduces wax formation at low temperatures. Rust Inhibitor The primary guide to rust inhibition is the ASTM D 665 Rust Test, which is a pass/fail test. Most lubricating oils contain rust inhibitors to enhance their ability to minimize rusting. Spectography A lab test method that measures the concentration of metallic particles smaller than ten microns. Viscosity Index Improver When added to oils, these high-molecular-weight polymers improve the viscosity index by coiling and uncoiling in response to temperature. They do not affect the pour point at low temperature while providing sufficient viscosity at high temperature.

Oils marked Comp are compounded with 3% to 10% fatty or synthetic fatty oils. Residual compounds-diluent type, commonly known as solvent cutbacks, are heavy oils containing a volatile, non-flammable diluent for east of application. The diluent evaporates leaving a thick film of lubricant on the gear teeth. Viscosities listed are for the base compound without diluent. *** Viscosities of AGMA Lubricant Number 13 and above are specified at 100C (210F) as measurement of viscosities of these heavy lubricants at 40C (100F) would not be practical.

VISCOSITY CLASSIFICATION EQUIVALENTS

ISO VISCOSITY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

Many petroleum products are graded according to the ISO Viscosity Classification System, approved by the International Standards Organization (ISO). Each ISO viscosity grade number corresponds to the mid-point of a viscosity range expressed in centistokes (cSt) at 40C. For example, a lubricant with an ISO grade of 32 has a viscosity within the range of 28.835.2, the midpoint of which is 32. Rule-of-Thumb: The comparable ISO grade of a given product whose viscosity in SUS at 100F is known can be determined by using the following conversion formula: SUS @ 100F 5 cSt @ 40C

UNDERSTANDING OIL ANALYSIS VISCOSITY Probably the most important single property of a lubricating oil. It is a major factor in the development of the load carrying ability of an oil. It is defined as resistance to flow at 40 degrees Centigrade and typically reported in Centistokes (cSt). WEAR METALS The presence of these metals can indicate a wear problem on a microscopic level before the problem can be detected by conventional means. The existence of a wear problem is determined not only by absolute values of metals, but more importantly by a relative increase or trend in one or more of these metals.
