BelgiumtoarriveattheoriginoftheGreatCannonofGhent,variouslycalled*DulleGriet'(FoolishorEvilMeg),or'HetMonstervanGent'(TheMonsterofGhent),or,from itsbeingpaintedred,'De RoodeDuyvel'(TheRedDevil).DulleGriet bearsincisedonherbarrel the CrossofBurgundyandtheinsigniaoftheOrderoftheGoldenFleece,foundedbythe
Duke,PhiliptheGood,in1430.Unlessthese marksareofalaterdate,whichseemsunlikely,shewas,therefore,forgedafterthatyearandbefore1452,whenthepeopleofGhentusedheratthesiegeofOudenaardewheretheyhadtoabandon herowingtoasuccessfulsallyof thedefenders.1Thelaterhistoryofthecannonis thatshelayatOudenaardetill1572,when shewassent backtoGhentinthechargeofamercenaryofthatcity
namedRockelfing.ThenamelookslikeaplayonElphinstone,but ofitsbearernothingfurtherisknown.OnarrivinginGhent

namelyofbars ofiron,weldedtogetherlongitudinally,andheld
byringsofthesamemetal.Thisisbynomeansanuncommontype,otherexamplesbeingthegunscalled'LesMichelettes',
abandonedbytheEnglishattheBattleofLeMontSt.Michel
in1434,andtheguns,nowlost,atNarbonne.Therewas
anotherMeg,'DeGrooteGriet'(MuckleMeg),atMalinesin
1470,also offorgediron.
