After 17 years in the software and music industries, Alyn Kelley is redefiningherself as a physician. One of her dreams has been to work abroad with an organization likeDoctors Without Borders. She has had a lifelong interest in travel and in serving the underservedand sees the The Kenya Project as a fabulous opportunity to combine both. - Alyn Kelley

My name is Daniel Zeccola and I am a part of The Kenya Project because Iwant to be able to learn how to provide excellent health care to the poor in the developing world. Idecided to go into medicine because I believe that a career as a physician will allow me to have tothe most directly positive effect on the lives of the poor. I have already spent time working inhospitals in Africa and I know that the work can be exceptionally rewarding but also terribly sad andfrustrating. I decided to go on this particular trip to Kenya because the trip will be led by a team of doctors who have committed much of their lives to help those most in need. As a member of thetrip I am hoping to learn from these doctors how to provide care that is compassionate and highquality even in situations where there are few resources. - Daniel ZeccolaWe live in an increasingly informed and intimate world. This give us theopportunity to reach out to a poor county, to serve poor populations, in a place like Kenya.Personally this is important for me because we are all in this together: the suffering and thehealers. In participating in this trip to Kenya I see a great opportunity to get the sick and sufferinginvolved in their own health and well being. While it is important for us to practice the science of medicine, we must not forget the art: being involved in our patients' lives to the fullest extent. Our group from UC Davis School of Medicine will be accomplishing this goal on our trip. - David English

Traveling has played a huge role in my life, not only by shaping me as anindividual but by more clearly defining the world around me as well. From the streets of Italy to thethe bazaars of India I have encountered people and perspectives that have infused me withboth heartache and inspiration. Through my work with infectious disease overseas anddomestically, I have learned a great deal about the realities of present day health care systems andthe need for compassionate and dedicated physicians working within them. The Kenya Project is achance for me to return to the global community to pursue my passion for learning, educating, andhealing those in need and furthermore, an opportunity to learn the skills necessary to contribute tothe course of change in the future. - Kamala Nyamathi

One benefit that I hope to gain from The Kenya Project, in both the short andlong-term, is a proficiency in the basic medical skills, including a broadening of my medicalknowledge. I know that participating in The Kenya Project will allow me to treat patients withconditions that I would rarely see in the United States. But my main reason for wanting toparticipate in The Kenya Project is the opportunity to travel and experience cultures outside of myown. I believe that travelling and experiencing other cultures first-hand is the most effective way tofacilitate an interchange of learning. I also think that this will help me improve my sense of culturalcompetence when treating patients here at home. - Steve Inano
