Paula Lisowski, Seniors Program Manager, and the Takoma Park Recreation Department invite you to an end of the summer picnic on Friday, August 24, 2012, at Heffner Community Center in Takoma Park. We will supply the food and fun! Join with your friends for a great party celebration. Enjoy a variety of tasty picnic foods and desserts, and you can create your own delicious ice cream sundaesyummy! Paula has prepared some fun picnic party games. Get ready to play. You may win a prize! This special event is open to adults age 55 and older. The Heffner Center is wheelchair accessible and air-conditioned. The picnic will take place rain or shine. National Night Out


Join the Takoma Park Police Department and your friends and neighbors for this years annual National Night Out, Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 69 p.m. at 7510 Maple Avenue. Senior Room: Open For Your Leisure


The Senior Room, which is located between the Computer Center and the Library, is a comfortable room for seniors to read, play cards and board games, and attend classes at various times each month. Four computers* are available to seniors.
*You need a Takoma Park Library card to access the computers. Food and drinks are not permitted in the Senior Room.

Summer Game Room Hours:


The Game Room is available for adults 55 and older to play pool, table tennis, and other active games. The Game Room hours will change for the summer months due to the Summer Camps schedule, June 18 to August 17, 2012.

Gentle Water Movement Class at Piney Branch School Swimming Pool


In partnership with the pool, the Recreation Department would like to promote the Gentle Water Movement class, lead by Anne LeVeque. This shallow-water class uses flotation belts, aqua-barbells and water noodles to increase flexibility and strength. Tuesdays Contact the Pool for more 4:004:45 p.m. information and registration. Bone Builders

Table Tennis

A great way to improve eye-hand coordination: helps keep the body healthy and the mind sharp. Drop-in. Game room.** No cost.

Bone Builders consists of three parts: balance exercises, weight training and discussion concerning diet, safety and exercise. This program, in partnership with Montgomery County, uses trained RSVP volunteers supervised by a certified trainer. Registration is required. Dance Studio. No cost.

Gentle Tai Chi

Kirk Talbott will introduce you to the ancient Chinese internal martial art of tai-chi chuan, a gentle moving meditation that improves health and restores balance and calm. The class will emphasize relaxation, posture, and breathing through the slow, integrated exercise of the traditional Yang-style short form.

Carol Mermey, RYT, will introduce you to the ways yoga can help you increase flexibility, strength, and balance, using a series of seated and standing poses. Learn to use the internet, a word processing program, and email. You need a Takoma Park Library card* to access the computers, and take this course. Limit six participants. How to register for trips beginning Wednesday, August 1

1. To begin the registration process, please call 301-891-7280 to include your name on a pre-registration list.
Note: This list will hold the participants place in line for 3 days to one week, depending on when the trip is scheduled in the month. Registration for the current months trip (s) will usually begin on the first business day of the month. To insure proper processing, it is best to speak directly with a Recreation Department staff person. Do not leave a recorded message.

2. A Takoma Park Recreation Department registration form is required for each trip.
Note: This form must be received by the end of the pre-registration period, or the participant will be removed from the list, and the space will become available.

3. Please register in-person, or mail the registration form to: Takoma Park Recreation Department, 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912.
Note: We have a fair first come-first serve system for all participants. Trips are popular and fill up fast, so register early. If you have any questions, please call Paula Lisowski, Seniors Program Manager at 301-891-7280. You may also call the general Recreation information line at 301-891-7290.

Trip # 1: Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, Senior Day, Gaithersburg, Maryland

Back by popular demand, we will return again this year to enjoy a good old-fashioned county fair with animal and agricultural exhibits, craft shows, commercial vendor booths and festival foods. Bring your lunch, or spending money to buy lunch, and wear comfortable walking shoes. Some, but not all, of the fairgrounds buildings and grounds are accessible by wheelchair. Dress appropriately for comfort. Rain or Shine! Date: Tuesday, August 14, 2012 Time: 9:00 a.m.3:00 p.m. Meet at Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue. Bus pick up at Franklin Apartments, Mapleview Apartments, and Victory Tower only. Registration is required. Trip # 2: National Museum of Health and Medicine, Silver Spring, Maryland

The National Museum of Health and Medicine recently moved to Silver Spring, relocating from its former spot at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. You will see a variety of unusual medical exhibits from Americans past, from which you may form an appreciation of modern medicine. Warning: Some of you may find a few of these medical exhibits disturbing but most of you will find them fascinating. Dress for comfort. Rain or Shine! Bring spending money to purchase your lunch at a local eatery. Date: Thursday, August 23, 2012 Time: 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Meet at Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue. Bus pick up at Franklin Apartments, Mapleview Apartments, and Victory Tower only. Registration is required. Our June 7th trip to the new National Harbor was fantastic! We enjoyed the beautiful weather and sight seeing. A great day for all.
