1. CONNECTION
The woman caught in the act 
Grace watched with interest as Chloe drank her rst glass of wine in onego. A glass or two was neither here nor there on a girls’ night out, but itwas the speed at which it disappeared that was surprising.It was getting dark outside the Italian restaurant. The group of womenwere at their favourite table by the window, where hanging baskets dancedoutside in a light breeze. Trailing tendrils of summer owers cast theirshadows across the table as shop lights winked in between. The six of themwere secluded, but could still watch people go by. They’d ordered foodand their waiter had just lled their glasses. He was young, maybe in hismid-twenties; everything about him cried ‘recent-holiday-somewhere-hot’,with tanned, well-muscled arms and his chest partially on view at the openneck of his crisp, white, linen shirt. He smiled condently as he made eyecontact with a few of them. The ickering candlelight glowed through thewine and masked the heightened colour in some attered cheeks. Goodfriends, good wine, good food and, of course, the good waiter. What morecould women want, other than perhaps more of the waiter?Grace returned her attention to her friend. It struck her that therewas a lot more that Chloe wanted. She watched her curl a stray strandof dark hair behind her ear, thoughtfully touching the simple diamondstud that Mark had given her for their tenth wedding anniversary. Graceremembered how excited Chloe had been when she’d shown them off toher a few months ago. She watched Chloe press her earlobe between herforenger and thumb, and then run her hand down the side of her neck.Wisps of hair fell from a loose knot at the back of her head, making her
