Foreword
The CarbonTrust01
There is no longer any seriousscientific doubt that climate changeis happening, that human activity isthe major factor behind the change,
and that we face serious consequences
without timely and appropriatelyscaled responses.
Reports from both the Stern Review of the economics ofclimate change and the United Nations’ IntergovernmentalPanel on Climate Change (IPCC), amongst many others, have prompted significant changes in the public, political andcorporate mood towards climate change, moving the issuebeyond scientific debate to focus on the actions needed toeffectively reduce emissions. These developments have been translated into increasedpressure on business and organisations to act. Regulators, investors, board members, clients and customers arenow demanding tangible, measurable action to reducecarbon emissions. Many companies and organisations in the UK have respondedto these pressures and it is inspiring to see the more forwardthinking of them moving quickly to reduce direct operationalemissions, with some starting to act on the indirect emissionsfrom their supply chains, products and services.
However, these actions are not yet at the scale neededfor the UK to meet its stretching emissions reductionsobjectives, or to become a global leader on climate
change action. To really drive the development of the new low carboneconomy, not only do we need to communicate to businessand the public sector that the cost of inaction will vastlyoutweigh that of action on climate change, but that from
action and developing appropriate solutions new markets and
commercial opportunities will emerge. At the Carbon Trustit is our aim to accelerate the UK’s move to a low carboneconomy and to do so not only by showing businesses thatreducing emissions can reduce risk and costs but that thereare also new and exciting low carbon markets waiting todeliver commercialreturns to those willing to develop andinvest in them.To catalyse the action from businesses and organisationsthat is needed to achieve these aims, we work in fivecomplementary business areas to explain, deliver, develop, create and finance low carbon enterprise.Only by working across all of these areas will we really beable to harness the power of business and the economy tomake carbon a new currency and the UK the leading light inlow carbon enterprise.
