background of the violent incidentsand rights violations against ArakaneseMuslims. The objective of this report is tobring to the public opinion developmentsin the region, inform the Islamic world andinternational community, and urge decision-making bodies to take necessary steps to endescalating acts of violence in Arakan.Incidents deemed humiliating to humandignity have been going on in Arakan forlong years. Recent clashes have left more
than 1,000 Muslims dead and over 90,000
Muslims homeless. Most of the Arakaneseleeing violence are seeking refuge in camps inneighboring Bangladesh. However, faced withunimaginably inhumane conditions at thesecamps Arakanese Muslims are losing hopes fora better future. Kala, a 75-year-old Arakaneserefugee who has been in these camps forlong years, describes refugees’ despair: “Weare waiting for death that will relieve us ofour suering.” To make the matters moretragic, Bangladesh not only has been denyingrefugees that have been coming since Juneentry into the country but also returning thosewho arrived in the camps in the past years. This report on the ongoing violence in Arakanhas been prepared using interviews withrefugees who led Arakan and sought shelterin dierent countries, information provided byhuman rights organizations, and 14-year-longexperience of IHH in the region.
