ROLE OF HYDROLOGY IN WATER RESOURCES PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES

Development of Water System

*The

nomads of prehistoric times wandered to find good watering places and green pastures. They pitched their camps beside water and moved on where the nearby pasture where exhausted. River and lakes were probably humankinds first constant supply of water. People drew water with hollow shells, animal skulls or leather bags.

People learned that when small ponds and streams dried some water lingered under the water table beds and could be reached by digging shallow holes, deeper holes, which reach water table resulted in permanent wells.

*People eventually learned to dam streams to form reservoirs, ensuring permanent water supplies.

*First world cities built open tanks to catch and store rainwater. When water became scarce, the people used the stored water.

As population grew, water supply become inadequate, open canals were dug to bring river water to the cities. Still inadequate water supplies, tunnel dug through a mountain to bring water into his fortified cities. By this time, it was an enormous engineering achievement. Engineering knowledge applied, cities developed some types of aqueduct system.

Aqueduct System- artificial water ways, it may be canals, open troughs, overland pipes or tunnels. As cities grew, sources of water is sometimes insufficient or even becomes to polluted for domestic use. City water supply were limited and often contaminated. Pumping was introduced.

Desalination- is a process by which fresh water can be made from sea water. As the competition of water resources becomes more intense, increasing attention give to water that are widely available but unusable because of their salt content. Through land-base seawater-desalting plant, available, usable water is being offered.

We, as future engineer, what do you think will be the system or ways in terms of planning water resources here in the Philippines 20 years after?
