Introducon for Facilitators
This Ecosystem Management training program is designed to bring together, in a facilitated andhighly interacve seng, a group of 15–30 catchment managers, advancing their interest and skill inecosystem approaches to water and to their catchment. Our opening perspecve is that the managersmost likely to aend are based in integrated watershed management IWRM and bring an engineers’approach to resource management. These materials are designed to support a facilitated, face-to-face,week-long workshop that will empower such managers to understand the tools and concepts neededto build programs, direct sta and allocate resources as they develop and implement an ecosystemapproach. This week-long workshop is designed to be a facilitated experience; there is no intent that aparcipant will read and master the materials on their own.There always will be benet in local adaptaon and customizaon of materials to be oered. Local casestudies, a local facilitator, and strong local examples demonstrang gender roles are expected in everyapplicaon of the materials. It is quite possible, for example, that the most appropriate parcipantsin a region are unable to parcipate for more than 3 and a half days. In such an instance, it wouldappropriate to select a subset of these materials that best meets the needs of that chosen audience.The role of the facilitators is central to the capacity-building approach we oer in the materials.We expect that there will be two facilitators involved in each oering of the training. Usually, oneof those two will be familiar with the training materials themselves, and familiar with the eld of ecosystem management. The second person is expected to have at least some experience in capacitybuilding and in water or ecosystem management but is expected to play a more signicant role inlocal calibraon. As described below, the training is designed to be held in a self-contained, relavelyisolated seng, perhaps a training facility or a lodge in a relavely rural seng. Such a seng willencourage the parcipants to focus on the material and the interacons, rather than on distraconsfrom a surrounding community. The seng also will facilitate the two eld trips that are built into thetraining design. We ancipate that the local facilitator will be very familiar with the physical seng of the training (i.e., the catchment where the training is being held) and therefore, will be able to lead localcalibraon (i.e., development of local case studies, interpretaon of the materials in a local context,selecon of parcipants, idenfying gender specic examples, and arranging local logiscs).Our intent in designing these materials is that the two facilitators play very signicant but disnct roles.The role of the local facilitator is envisioned to include:• Idenfying and recruing parcipants, including sending, collecng and synthesizing the pre-quesonnaire;• Choosing the training facility (following the guidance below) and ensuring that it meets theneeds of the workshop;• Selecng a local catchment for the two eld trips, and ensuring that the parcipants canview appropriate management pracces, meet with local people, and have access to lunch,bathrooms and other amenies in the local catchment;
