Message From the President

Phoenix iaedp is halfway through what is turning out to be a great year. As I sit here in the heat, I can think of cooler days that I associate with our upcoming Winter Gala. But first, there is a lot of other information to share with you Not only have we had two great events with two well-known eating disorders expert speakers this year, we have moved our meetings to a wonderful facility. Thanks to our sponsorship, we moved our June meeting, and all future meetings for this year into the Chaparral Suites. This should allow easier access for most, more room space, great parking, and..did I say a delightful food presentation? We hope you will join us at Chaparral Suites for our September meeting and December gala. Please be sure to check out the information in this newsletter regarding the September meeting which will not only be informative, but interactive as well. Dr. Nikow will be showing us firsthand how to create a group for trauma survivors with an eating disorder. Dont worry. If we have no volunteers in the audience, the iaedp board will be summoned upon. Our December gala should be an exciting event, with CEUs being offered as well as two wonderful and well known presenters. Dr. Michelle May (author of Am I Hungry? What To Do When Diets Dont Work) will be speaking and walking us through a mindful eating luncheon. After lunch, we will all be inspired by Jenni Schaefer (author of Goodbye Ed, Hello Me: Recover from your Eating Disorder and Fall in Love with Life). There will also be raffles, booths and other fun events. We are looking for talented individuals who might like to play background music of various types for us before the speakers start, during the raffle, and whenever there is down time. If you might know of anyone who is interested, please contact phoenix iaedp at our e-mail address, which is phoenix@iaedp-az.com. As this event is open to the community we would love to have your clients come share their musical talents with us. Sincerely,

Summer 2012

Homework Compliance Issues? Not Any More with Recovery Record

As an outpatient provider, do you every find yourself spending half your session trying to figure out whats been happening for your client between appointments? When it comes to treating eating disorders, this information is priceless to the recovery process but can often be time-consuming to gather. That is until now. In 2011, Jenna Tregarthen, a PhD Psychology student from Australia, partnered with the Stanford Summer Institute for Entrepreneurship, Stanford Eating Disorder Research Program and Guardian SD to develop Recovery Record. Recovery Record is a therapeutic homework app developed for the iPhone and Android platforms. Recovery Record allows clients to log their daily meals, snacks, thoughts, feelings and behaviors, though it is much, much, more than just a logging tool. Recovery Record also provides clients with logging reminders, access to their meal plans and grounding and coping tools, as well as personal and community based incentives. Additionally, providers can elect to set up a provider account at www.recoveryrecord.com and create an exclusive provider PIN. This PIN can then be given to clients to enter into their app, which allows clinicians access to all logs posted by their clients. Personally, I have just begun to use Recovery Record with my clients. I definitely like what I see at this point and am anxious to see how this extra tool impacts the overall treatment process. I anticipate seeing a greater adherence to and compliance with homework, which I believe will have a greater impact on overall recovery. Right now, I think my favorite part of the app is the Community section, which has a confidential leader board where clients anonymously compete to see who logs the most meals each day. This feature alone provides an incentive for clients to keep logging. If clients continue to keep their log and have to open the app, they are reminded multiple times a day about their goal of recovery. Even if they are not doing well, the app in it of itself is a subtle daily reminder of their overarching goal of recovery. Additionally, if they interact with the app, clients are only one click away from others working towards the same goal, which can only serve to remind clients once again that they are not alone in making the next right choice. You can download Recovery Record from the iPhone and Android app store on your device and develop your own personal provider PIN at www.recoveryrecord.com. Winter Gala Celebration

Michelle May, M.D., author of Am I Hungry? What To Do When Diets Dont Work Jenni Schaefer, author of Goodbye Ed, Hello Me: Recover from your Eating Disorder and Fall in Love with Life

Attention, Musicians
The Phoenix iaedp chapter is busily planning our Winter Gala celebration. It is a time for us as a community to come together and celebrate the joy of recovery from eating disorders. We would love to help showcase the talents of individuals in recovery or their family members by seeking out individuals who can play an instrument during our event. Do you or someone who has been a support to you during your recovery walk play the piano? The cello? The violin? Or another instrument? We would love to hear from you and consider you to be a part of this wonderful celebration! Please contact us at phoenix@iaedp-az.com. to share your gift and talent of music during our celebration event. We look forward to hearing from you.
