August 13, 2012Dear FriendI hope everyone is enjoying their summer and it was great to see you all at summer caucus lastweek. I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign my Speakership effective 11:59 p.m. onMonday, August the 13
, 2012. This is not a decision I came to lightly. However, after prayerfulconsideration, and discussion with my friends and family this is the right course for my daughtersand I.Over the past eight years serving in the Missouri House has been one of the greatest honors of mylife. I will always cherish the opportunity we shared to move our state in a positive direction, and tomake an impact on people's lives. Being a member of the Missouri House of Representatives is aprofound responsibility, and I know that our accomplishments have lived up to that expectation.I am perhaps most grateful for the trust that my caucus and the House as has shown by electing meto serve as the Majority Floor Leader and as Speaker. I have tried to conduct myself in a manner thatyou all could be proud of, and to run the House in a fair and honest way.We have achieved some amazing things over the past 8 years; Ranging from improving thebusiness climate, to living within our means, to cutting taxes, to Jessica's law, to reforming our criminal sentencing . . . But as you are all aware public service can come at a price.Over the past eight years I sometimes put the interest of the Caucus and The House ahead of myfamily, however my decision to resign early is a decision that I made with my daughters and putsmy family first. I will continue to practice optometry, but as all of you know I enjoy campaigns andpublic policy and will be consulting on both.I choose to leave early because I did not want to be a paid consultant while serving as the Speaker of the House. I have discussed this with our Speaker Pro-Tem Shane Schoeller, and our Speaker-Elect Tim Jones . They have been very gracious and I am grateful for their friendship. I am not onlyexcited for the next chapter of my life, but I'm excited for the future of this State. The House is filledwith amazingly talented, honest and compassionate people. I have the upmost faith that the State isin good hands! While I may no longer be a member of the House, I will not be far away. Do not hesitate to ask mefor help, guidance, assistance, or fellowship. While I welcome leaving many aspects of being a StateRepresentative, and the Speaker, I will certainly miss the friendships that have developed over mytenure.Sincerely,
