Without doubt, the mostcosmopolitan and longed-for festival is the Carnival, which isof International Interest, andwhere one can enjoy the colourfulimagination and joy of the local population. The main point for the Carnival is Santa Cruz deTenerife which becomes a realhuman river of dances, masks, and where for several days onlymusic and rhythm occur.
Each year a different theme ischosen and the carnival kicks off with the presentation of the
Carnival Queen Contestants
.Days of band and murga (comedicfolk singers) contests and concertsfollow and culminate in the GrandParade. Though the Grand Paradeis really the highlight of theCarnival season, more eventsfollow. Festivities focus on SantaCruz to begin with but graduallyspread out to other areas as eachtown and village celebrates itsown fiesta.

Tenerife carnival is finished with the burial of the sardine; a huge papier-mache sardine is paraded through the city followed byhundreds of weeping ‘widows’.
