WEBSITE VS. WIKI VS. BLOG
There’s no reason your club can’t have all three, but remember that every new site your groupcreates is a site that will have to be maintained and updated. Make sure you know why you needthem all and be sure to exploit the strengths of each format!Consider:
•
Is the site your group’s public face, or will it be for members only?
•
Will you use the site to discuss private group matters?
•
How often will you need to update the site?
•
Do you want all group members or members of the public to be able to post comments or contribute to your site?
•
Who is responsible for maintaining the site and what web skills do they have?
WEBSITES
A website is a good tool for presenting your group to the world and communicating basicinformation about your group and its activities. However in order to create and maintain a website, you will require someone who has some skills in web authoring and html coding. Access to server space or a web-hosting service is also needed. For an introduction to html and extensive online tutorials in html coding:http://www.webmonkey.com/http://www.w3schools.com/html/Open source html editor software (like Dreamweaver, but free):http://kompozer.net/Simple site-building with no html knowledge needed:http://sites.google.com/Free web design templates:http://www.oswd.org/
WIKIS
Wikis are simple websites that do the html coding for you. The interface is easy to use and youcan get a wiki up and running in a matter of minutes! However, wikis tend to be pretty plainappearance-wise, so they may not be your best option for your group’s public face. However, thestrength of a wiki is that anyone with the right security permissions (which you can grant) can edit it – so any of your members can contribute to or change the content. Wikis are a great way for your group members to discuss club business, organize events, schedule meetings, brainstorm, andcollaborate! Wikis can also be very useful for passing on organizational knowledge, such as howyou’ve organized events, information for your important contacts, and sources of funding for your activities, to the incoming executive or group leaders.
