BOARD OF GOVERNORS NOMINEES SOUGHT FOR 5 SEATS The Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts is seeking individuals who are interested in serving on the Board of Governors. The deadline for nominations for these five board seats is September 30, 2012, and applications must be received by the HARA office (not postmarked) before 4pm that day. Individuals elected will serve a three-year term that ends in Fall 2015. Please note that the HARA Board of Governors is a working board comprised of volunteers - it is not an advisory board and board members are not paid. Selection to the Board of Governors requires your regular attendance at the monthly Board meetings, and board members must be willing to meet the following expectations: Take a leadership position by serving as chair or co-chair of one (1) or more committees. Serve on at least three (3) committees. Solicit contributions in fundraising campaigns to support HARA, its programs and activities. Participate in formulating long and short term objectives and goals. Actively participate in the activities of HARA. Ensure that all HARA actions, activities, and programs are fair to the members the Board serves, and that no group or individual member is given preference. There has been some confusion in the past regarding board eligibility and artists who have or will have releases entered in the N! H"k# Hanohano Awards. Please note that all regular members of the Academy are eligible to be nominated and be elected to the Board

of Governors. Also, members of the Board of Governors are eligible to submit entries for the N! H"k# Hanohano Awards; serving on the board does not preclude you from entering your releases whether you are an artist, producer, engineer, record label executive or participate in the recording in any way. If you are interested and are willing to accept the responsibilities and expectations that go along with a seat on the board, please submit your name and a short bio by calling the office by phone at (808) 593-9424 or by email: info@nahokuhanohano.org. If you do nominate someone else for the board we will contact them to confirm that they are interested in serving and are willing to meet the expectations of the position. NEW FOR 2012: INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSITION OF THE YEAR During its summer retreat, the board discussed the issue of instrumental compositions being submitted in the Song of the Year category. Recognizing the number of new instrumental compositions being recorded and included in releases, the board chose to create a new Instrumental Composition of the Year category for these works, and restrict Song of the Year entries to those with both lyrics and melody. The inaugural Instrumental Composition of the Year award will be given at the 2013 N! H"k# Hanohano Awards. The Board of Governors has updated and clarified the wording of some categories for the 2013 awards. An updated document containing the criteria for all categories will be posted on our website and emailed to members soon.

2012 N HK HANOHANO AWARD NOMINEE & WINNERS STICKERS AVAILABLE The HARA office has stickers available for purchase that can be placed on your CDs. Examples are displayed to the right. Please call the office at (808) 593-7424 or email info@nahokuhanohano.org for pricing.

2012 GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING TO BE HELD MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2012 HARA will hold its general membership meeting on Friday, November 12, 2012. The location has not been determined at this time,

but we will notify members via our next newsletter, by email and our website when the location has been selected. 3 ANNUAL N HIWAHIWA O HAWAII FESTIVAL TO BE HELD SEPT. 15-18, 2011 IN TOKYO, JAPAN This September will mark the 5th Annual N! Hiwahiwa O Hawaii Festival in Tokyo, Japan. The festival features winners from Merrie Monarch and the N! H"k# Hanohano awards. The event takes place on September 15th, 16th and 17th at Tokyo Dome Citys JCB Hall. The hall holds about 2,500 attendees and the event has historically sold out both matinee and evening shows. This year, Female Vocalist of the Year recipient Natalie Ai Kamauu and Group of the Year recipient Waipuna were chosen by the N! Hiwahiwa producers to represent the N! H"k# Hanohano award-winning artists. We offer our sincerest thanks to Yomiuri Shimbun and the N! Hiwahiwa O Hawaii ohana for their continued support of Hawaiis music and their partnership with the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts. WANT TO ENTER A RELEASE IN THE TM GRAMMYS BUT NOT SURE HOW? The GRAMMY Awards, unlike our N! H"k# Hanohano Awards, requires that a record company, media company or individual member of NARAS, The Recording Academy, make all entries. It is important to note that you do not have to be a NARAS member to have your recording
RD

entered, but a member must complete the entry process for you. We realize that many of our members are not members of NARAS, but would like to enter their releases for the GRAMMY Awards, and HARA can help you. Your Board of Governors includes several NARAS members, and they will be happy to help you enter your release so that it can be included on the GRAMMY Preliminary Ballot, which is sent to voting members in December. The 55th GRAMMY Awards eligibility period is for recordings released between October 1, 2011 and September 30, 2012. Only recordings that are commercially released in the United States are eligible for consideration. The entry process for members begins on August 1, 2012 and closes on August 31, 2012. It is during this period that we can help you. Recordings eligible for submission must be released by September 30, 2012, which means if you are planning to put out a release in September, you must still enter it before the August 31, 2012 deadline. Please contact the HARA office at (808) 593-9424 for more information or to ask for assistance with entering your release.
