isan art historian and designerwho specializes in the art and ar-chitecture of India and is basedin Bangalore, India. Annapurnahas led four previous AIA toursof India and received rave evalu-ations. She earned her Ph.D. inArt History from Columbia Uni-versity, where her work focusedon religion, kingship, architec-ture, and urban planning in me-dieval Southern India. Anna-purna heads Jackfruit, a researchand design organization thatworks in the visual, built, andperforming arts. She is also thefounder of A.R.T., an organiza-tion that gathers resources andpromotes research and teachingin art and architectural history,archaeology, crafts, design, andother related disciplines in aca-demic and non-academic fo-rums. Currently, Annapurna is on the Advisory Council for Marg Publications,South Asia’s oldest publishing house dedicated to the arts. She also curated ashow at the Smithsonian’s Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of Art on courtly paintingand devotion in northern India. Annapurna has taught at Columbia and DrewUniversities, and has lectured at many universities in India. Her publicationsinclude work on the medieval city of Vijayanagara, modernism in India,contemporary religiosities, and thepolitics of tourism and heritage.

Aurangabad / Ajanta
Spend the morning exploring the Bud-dhist caves at Ajanta, which featurelovely painted scenes of Buddha’s life aswell as carefully-rendered images of con-temporaneous Buddhist Mahayana pre-cepts. Return to Aurangabad where the re-mainder of the afternoon is at leisure.(B,L,D)

Fly to Madurai, where we check in to ourdeluxe hotel upon arrival. The remainderof the afternoon is at leisure.

Madurai
Spend the day exploring one of India’s old-est cities. Madurai sits on the Vaigai River,and its main feature is the temple dedicatedto the goddess Meenakshi. Built over thecourse of a millennium or more, the mainshrine stands at the center of a multi-en-closure complex with four gateways thatopen to the cardinal directions. The cityfeatures other attractions as well, includ-ing the Nayaka King’s Palace, partially re-stored in the 19th century and whose re-mains demonstrate the power and wealthof the Nayakas. The city is full of bazaars,shops, and restaurants. This eveningyou may choose to revisit the templeto see the evening ritual of the god-dess being escorted to the god’s cham-ber. (B,L,D)
 Day 7: Wednesday, February 27 
Madurai / Periyar
This morning we transfer via deluxemotorcoach to the Periyar wildlifesanctuary, located in the state of Kerala. The sanctuary centers on alarge, picturesque lake and offers won-derful wildlife viewing opportunities.There are elephants, deer, wild pigs,and a number of bird species includ-ing kingfisher cormorants and theMalabar hornbill. There are also an es-timated forty tigers now residing in thepark.

Periyar / Alleppey / Kuttanad
