Observation CWhen Reesa arrives at Melinda’s house, Melvin shows no hesitation to strike aconversation with her. Melvin demonstrates basic trust, something that is found amongmost children with secure attachment to their parents. Basic trust is a sense that the worldis reliable. Melvin shows this because he doesn’t show any stranger anxiety when he firstmeets Reesa. After talking, Reesa and Melinda tell him they have to do homework and begin working at the table. Melvin’s caregiver is cooking a snack for Melvin. Melvin isvery well behaved and starts to play with his leapster video game. Melvin is very focusedin the video game and seems to have memorized the directions of the video gamenarrator. Melvin’s Mom finished making chicken nuggets and brings them to the table.Melvin declines the chicken nuggets because he is focused on the game. Melvin finishedthe game and shows his achievement to his mother; he looks very proud of himself.Melvin’s Mom tells him to go and work on his homework but Melvin refuses to get awayfrom his game. His leapster is his new toy and Melvin is intent on destroying the monster.Melvin’s mom leaves the room to do laundry. Melvin continues to occupy himself andentertains himself while she’s gone. Melvin shows secure attachment. Melvin is able to play comfortably, happily exploring his toys while his mom is gone. Attachment to one’s parent is an emotional tie one has with another person. Melvin’s mom comes back andsits down at the table next to Melvin. Melvin dances to the music coming out of hisleaptster and complains to his Mom that he is “scratchy.” Melvin’s mom reinforces hisstatement by telling him to say “itchy” instead of “scratchy.”Melvin’s drawing of his family also show evidence of his secure attachment to hiswhole family. Melvin’s drawing consists of the whole family standing next to each other.Dang 1
