AN EXAMPLE OF AN EXHIBITION BRIEF

Exhibition title: Designing for our future Main message: Every one of us has the power to slow climate change by making smart consumer choices. Storyline Human industry and activity is changing the Earths climate, making it hotter, and increasing the severity of droughts and floods. We can minimise those changes if we make small changes to our own lifestyles and buy products designed for the environment. Theme 1 If the climate gets hotter and drier, crops will fail and water will become scarce. Droughts, storms and bushfires will get worse. Subtheme 1.1 Scientists predict that Australias climate will warm, sea levels will rise and storms and droughts will become more intense. Depth indicator for a causeway or dam, with flood or drought years indicated at different heights Subtheme label Map showing CSIROs predictions for temperature and rainfall changes Photo of people in a fierce storm (preferably a recent Australian one) Sound recording of a storm. Subtheme 1.2 The local climate has already changed in the last 50 years. Old rain gauge Local weather records with a photo of the person who recorded them Subtheme label Photo of a location 50 years ago Photo of the same location today Video interviews with local people talking about how weather patterns have changed Theme label 3D objects Images/text/other Introductory label

Storyline Subtheme 1.3 Food and water will become scarcer and more expensive. Grow your own, or join a co-op that buys local produce. Food packets Models of fruit Fruit juice bottles Milk carton

Flyers from local food co-operatives Theme 2 Most of the worlds climate scientists agree that the greenhouse effect is responsible for warming the Earth. Greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere when we burn coal, oil and gas to power cars, trucks, businesses and homes. Subtheme 2.1 The greenhouse effect: how is it happening Subtheme 2.2 What are fossil fuels and why are they a problem? Lump of coal Toy petrol bowser or petrol can Gas hotplate ring Subtheme 2.3 Which gases are greenhouse gases and where do they come from? Toy cows grazing Toy cars Toy trucks Toy aeroplane Toy train Subtheme label Photo of a coal-fired power station Subtheme label Poster showing how the greenhouse effect is happening. Storyline Theme 3 It takes energy to make and transport everything we use. We can choose to buy things that are designed to save energy and materials, either in their manufacture or over their lifetimes. Subtheme 3.1 Buy products that are made using energy and materials efficiently: (a) reduced materials (b) reused materials (c) recycled materials (d) recyclable materials
