2Duration - c. 6 mins.The driving concept behind Duo is simply the problem of a using a piano (by all accountsa percussion instrument) with a sustaining string instrument. Therefore in this piece I attemptto play upon the capabilities of both instruments in regard to the different ways in which theycan create and then sustain sound.Duo begins with a slow introduction formed from Mendelssohn'sop.45 cello sonata, however, its constituent elements have been fragmented. This piece waschosen specifically because it highlighted some of the key issues of sonority that I wanted tohighlight. The five modal sets that form the melody, are a natural outworking of the first modalset, using a simple process of expansion and rotation of the modal centre. The restof the piece is formed from these sets and crucially how the two instruments relate toone another using various unisons, which allow each instrument to take on several different roles.
