THE CAUSES OF HUNGER

1. Seeing the Unseen 2. The Symptoms 3. The social and mental structure

Hunger and Poverty

Tangible Causes: Symptoms

Less-tangible Causes: Social Structure

Intangible Causes: Mindset

Hunger

Low income

Bad health
(mortality, morbidity, infections, diseases)

Low Education (Low intellectual development, learning deficiencies, few job skills)

And finally, all of these positions and roles are reinforced by society

Government Religious Institutions The market Families, church, school

People are not born waiting to dominate or waiting to be oppressed We fall into or assume the positions and roles society has created for us.

By mindset, we mean the thoughts, ideas, values, beliefs, attitudes we hold in our mind. Our mind set mirrors, recreates and reproduces our social structure

We see the social structure as the natural state of things:

Inmutable NOT created by human beings In the case of hunger and povery the result is often: Resignation

Paternalism and dependence Conformism and adaptation

Corruption Resignation Lack of voice

Self-justification

Oppressed women

Lack of responsibility Envy and gossip
