Identifying Potential Target Behaviors Student: Date: ______________________________________________ __________ Teacher:__________________

In order to create specific behavior goals and reinforcements for your student, one behavior needs to be targeted. Observe your student during the week and list at least three negative behaviors the child exhibits. Be specific! Do not write, Thor is bad. If Thor throws chairs, write that down. If Thor yells out in class, write that down. List those behaviors here: (M=morning & A=afternoon) 1. 2. 3. 4. ___________________________________________Time: ___________________________________________Time: ___________________________________________Time: ___________________________________________Time: M M M M A A A A

Now, at the end of the week, sit down and prioritize those behaviors according to the chart below. It may be that all the negative behaviors occur at a certain time, and that can help us narrow things down. If you see that the answers are never or not important to these questions, your student probably does not have behavior issues. It may just be a simple misunderstanding between you and the student.

Yes, this will take time, but our goal is to develop new, positive behaviors that will radiate throughout the students repertoire and affect them not only this year, but for years to come.

For the special education teacher: Help the general education teacher or teachers evaluate the behaviors listed. Compare answers within a group and discuss which negative behavior occurs the most frequently, poses a threat to others and, if changed, will help the student function more effectively in society. After you have decided on ONE SPECIFIC behavior, a behavior goal can be set in place.
