Today we heard about a very worthy InternationalService project initiated within our District
“KenyaSmiles,” a dental preventive care
and educationalprogram. Telling the story were
Sheila Hurst
of Redding, whose experiences in Kenya initiated theproject, and District Governor
Laura Day
of SanRamon. The program, described with attractive andclear photographs, involves a comprehensive publichealth and dental care activity in the heart of Africa. One of the features of the program is sending backpacks to children in Kenya with dental products, suchas toothbrushes, toothpaste, informational literature ondental care, a portable cup, and items donated byseveral dental organizations. The colorful and usefulback packs cost $10 and each contribution will bematched by The Rotary Foundation for greater leverageand expansion.
The donor’s name is included in each
back-pack sent to Kenya. There will be a vocational team of Dentists coming fromKenya to our District and then an exchange team toKenya to promote training, awareness, dental care andpublic health information and outreach.
Several members of Moraga Rotary “purchased” over
96 of the back packs with their generous contributionsto The Rotary Foundation for $960. It is good to seeour Club join in this very worthy International project.Other Club members may make contributions and givethem to treasurer,
Louise Schopke or PresidentFrank.
