Film Society of Bhubaneswar (FSB) is holding its regular monthly screening of films (for Members) for August 2012.

The screening will be held on Thursday, 23rd of August, evening 6PM onwards, at Jayadev Bhavan Auditorium, near Indira Gandhi Park, Bhubaneswar. The first screening of the evening, A Screaming Man (2010), is a film from Chad, Africa, directed by MahamatSaleh Haroun, one of the preeminent filmmakers from Africa working in contemporary world cinema. Adam, a former swimming champion in his sixties, is a pool attendant at a hotel in Chad. When the hotel gets taken over by new Chinese owners, he is forced to give up his job to his son, Abdel, leaving Adam humiliated and resentful. Meanwhile the country is in the throes of civil war. Rebel forces attack the government while the authorities demand the population to contribute to the "war effort," with money or volunteers old enough to fight. The District Chief constantly harasses Adam for his contribution. But Adam is penniless; he only has his son. In a moment of weakness, Adam makes a decision that he will forever regret. A Screaming Man has won critical acclaim in many major international film festivals, including the prestigious Jury Prize at Cannes 2010. Following last months screening of the documentary Had Anhad Bounded Boundless: Journeys with Ram and Kabir (2003), many of our members have requested the screening of its companion piece. Keeping that in mind, the second screening of the evening will be the documentary Koi Sunta Hai - Someone Is Listening: Journeys with Kumar and Kabir (2004). Interweaving the folk music traditions of the mystic poet Kabir with the life and music of the late classical singer Kumar Gandharva, this film searches for that elusive sound, that jhini si awaaz, Kabir urges us to hear. Where does it resonate, that subtle sound? Journeying between folk and classical, oral and written, rural and urban expressions of this 15th century mystic poet of north India, the film finds moments of both continuity and rupture between these disparate worlds. Best Regards, Secretary, Film Society of Bhubaneswar (FSB)
