In the southeastern Ebro Foreland Basin, the marine deposits of Lutetian and Bartonian age show excellent out-crop conditions, with a great lateral and horizontal continuity of lithostratigraphic units. In addition, the rich fos-sil record -mainly larger foraminifers-, provides biostratigraphic data of regional relevance for the whole Paleo-gene Pyrenean Basin, that can be used for the Middle Eocene biocorrelation of the western Tethys. Thiscontribution is a sedimentary and biostratigraphic synthesis of the basic outcrops and sections of the Lutetian andBartonian marine and transitional deposits in the southeastern sector of the Ebro Foreland Basin.

INTRODUCTION
This paper introduces the Middle Eocene (Lutetian andBartonian) marine and transitional outcrops and sections inthe southeastern sector of the Ebro Foreland Basin that werevisited during the Second Meeting of IGCP393, held in Vicin September 1997. The aim of this field trip was to providethe members of IGCP393 with larger foraminifer materialfrom the various Lutetian and Bartonian stratigraphic unitsthat yielded the paleontological samples used to the establishthe so called Shallow Benthic Zones (SBZ) defined by Se-rra-Kiel et al. (1998a, b). This new larger foraminifers newbiozoning of the Paleocene-Eocene of the Tethys is in partbased on the data resulting from the study of this material. The outcrops and sections presented here are groupedin three distinct areas: Empordà, Vic and Igualada (Fig. 1),and they were selected according to the following criteria:
