THE SET-UP
San Diego State opens its 90th season of football, 44th at the Division I level, the 14th and final as a member of the Mountain West Conference (SDSU joins the BIG EAST Conference for football next season) and the second under head coach Rocky Long on Saturday, Sept. 1 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle against Washington. Of the 53 FBS games scheduled on Saturday, this is one of only 12 to feature a pair of bowl teams from the 2011 campaign. The Aztecs played in the R+L Carrier New Orleans Bowl en route to an 8-5 season while the Huskies advanced to Valero Alamo Bowl and finished 7-6. San Diego State returns 13 starters and 40 letterwinners off a 2011 team that posted its second consecutive winning season and second straight bowl appearance. SDSU has not posted three consecutive winning seasons since 1989-91 and has never advanced to a bowl game in three straight years. The Aztecs are looking to win their third consecutive season-opening game for the first time since winning the opener four straight years from 1994 through 1997. This is just the third all-time meeting between the two schools, with UW owning a 2-0 series lead. In each of the previous encounters, Washington was ranked among the top three in the country at kickoff. Following the game, San Diego State opens a three-game homestand at Qualcomm Stadium (aka: Aztec Warrior Stadium) with a contest against Army on Sept. 8. In addition to playing three straight at home, SDSU will play five of its next six contests on home turf starting with the matchup against the Cadets.

San Diego State head coach Rocky Long has won his last three games against teams from the Pac-12 Conference. He guided the Aztecs to a 42-24 win over Washington State last season. That victory snapped the schools 17-game losing streak in Pac-12 games. Prior to coming to The Mesa, Long guided New Mexico to wins over Arizona in 2008 (36-28 in Albuquerque, N.M.) and 2007 (29-27 in Tucson, Ariz.). SDSU opens the 2012 campaign after advancing to bowl games each of the last two seasons (Poinsettia Bowl in 2010 and New Orleans Bowl in 2011). San Diego State has never gone to bowl games in three consecutive seasons. The Aztecs play seven home games in 2012, which ties for the programs highest number since 1976. SDSU plays its next three games at home (Army, North Dakota and San Jose State). San Diego State has won its last two season openers - both at home - dating back to a 2009 loss at UCLA in the lidlifter. The Aztecs have dropped their last 10 openers that have been played on the road. The last time SDSU opened a season with a win away from home was in 1981, when it defeated Colorado State, 30-14. San Diego State enters the opener having won three consecutive road games. It is the first three-game road winning streak for the Aztecs since 2000 (longest streak in 12 years). A win would make it the longest streak since 1980-81. Dating back to last season, SDSU is playing its third consecutive game in a stadium that houses an NFL team. San Diego State ended last season playing Fresno State at Qualcomm Stadium and faced Louisiana-Lafayette in the Superdome in the New Orleans Bowl. After this game, the Aztecs play their next three games at Qualcomm Stadium, making it six straight games in NFL venues. A Sept. 29 trip to Fresno State will snap the NFL venue streak at six. Despite serving as an assistant coach at SDSU for two seasons (2009-10), Rocky Long opens the 2012 campaign as the second winningest coach in Mountain West Conference history. Long has 70 wins while a member of the league, trailing only TCUs Gary Patterson (77 wins). With TCU no longer in the league, Long needs seven victories to tie the record and eight to break it. The other nine active coaches in the league have a combined 75 wins while their teams have been a member of the conference. Entering the 2012 football season, San Diego State has compiled the nations highest winning percentage in combined football and mens basketball during the past two seasons. The Aztecs are a combined 77-20 (79.4 percent) in the two sports since the beginning of the 2010 football season. See chart below Top Football & Mens Basketball Records Since Fall, 2010 1. Adding the success of the womens basketball program at SDSU, which has advanced to NCAA Tournament play in two of the last three seasons, further demonstrates the departments overall success. Combining football, mens basketball and womens basketball records from last season and San Diego State owns the sixth-best winning percentage in the country, trailing only Baylor, Stanford, Kentucky, Brigham Young and Notre Dame. See chart above The Aztecs have posted a 17-9 record over the past two seasons after needing 57 games to claim 17 victories prior to the 2010 campaign (SDSU went 17-40 during that stretch from the fifth game of the 2005 season through the end of 2009 campaign). The 17-9 record the last two seasons is tied with Baylor, Brigham Young, Kansas State and Toledo for the 29th-best record in the country over that twoyear span. SDSU has only five seniors listed as starters on the current depth chart, three on offense (RG Nike Embernate, C Alec Johnson, QB Ryan Katz) and two on defense (CB Leon McFadden and CB Josh Wade).

San Diego State returns seven starters on offense from last seasons 2011 team that scored 387 points, the second highest total for an Aztec squad in the last 15 seasons. SDSU has four offensive players appearing on preseason watch lists for the top player at their position in the country - junior tight end Gavin Escobar (John Mackey Award Watch List (TE), Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List (lineman)), senior center Alec Johnson (Rimington Trophy Watch List (center)), senior running back Walter Kazee (Doak Walker Award Watch List (RB)) and sophomore wide receiver Colin

Lockett (Biletnikoff Award Watch List (WR)) San Diego State ended the 2011 campaign by scoring 30 or more points in each of its final four games. It is the longest stretch of consecutive 30-point outings since a five-game stretch from Nov. 13, 2010 until Sept. 3, 2011. The Aztecs have had just three student-athletes start at quarterback since Nov. 18, 2006. During that 65 game stretch, Kevin OConnell (15 games during the 2006-07 seasons), Drew Westling (1 game; vs. Air Force on Oct. 21, 2006) and Ryan Lindley (49 games during the 2008-09-10-11 seasons). Senior Oregon State-transfer Ryan Katz will become the fourth SDSU player to start at the position in the last 66 games when he takes the opening snap in Seattle. Although Katz will be making his first appearance as an Aztec at Washington, he comes to The Mesa with a wealth of experience. A native of Santa Monica, Calif., Katz started 14 consecutive games for the Beavers, including all 12 games of the 2010 campaign. Among his highlights, was a 17-for-24, twotouchdown performance in an upset victory over USC during his sophomore campaign. Last season, due to graduation and injury, San Diego States combined receiving core ended the campaign with four career catches for 39 yards. That has changed significantly in 12 months, as SDSU enters the 2012 campaign with a Bletnikoff Award candidate and preseason all-Mountain West Conference selection in junior Colin Lockett (58 catches, 970 yards, 8 TDs in 2011), a former walk-on who had five or more catches six times last season, including three times in his final four games, in junior Dylan Denso (49 catches, 634 yards and 3 TDs in 2011) and highly-decorated USC transfer senior Brice Butler (41 catches, 554 yards and 3 TDs at USC). Although San Diego State look to replace third-round NFL Draft selection Ronnie Hillman, the Aztecs have quality depth at the position. Sophomore Adam Muema rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns against 10th-ranked Boise State in a game last season. In 2011, he rushed for 253 yards on 42 carries for a 6.0 yards per carry average in just six games. In his first 42 career carries, he has amassed more yards rushing than Hillman did in the same amount of carries. Also in the backfield, is senior Walter Kazee. A career 1,000-yard rusher, Kazees season was cut short last season when he suffered a season-ending knee injury at Colorado State. The offensive line is anchored by two returning starters - senior center Alec Johnson and senior right guard Nik Embernate. Joining the two seniors on the offensive line is converted tight end, now left guard junior Bryce Quigley, junior left guard Japeth Gordon and sophomore right tackle Zach Dilley. The only new member of the coaching staff, former SDSU offensive lineman Mike Schmidt, leads the unit. San Diego State has gone 64 games without suffering a shutout (Nov. 18, 2006 at TCU). That is the only time the Aztecs have been shutout in their last 159 games.
SDSU returns six starters off a squad that has continually gotten better under the direction of secondyear head coach Rocky Long, who is in his fourth season as the defensive coordinator. Statistically one of the nations worst units less than five years ago, Long has transitioned the San Diego State defense into one of the most feared units on the West Coast. The Aztecs are led on defense by Mountain West preseason defensive player of the year, senior cornerback Leon McFadden. McFadden is on the preseason watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player) and the Jim Thorpe Award (DB). McFadden, who has been a first-team all-Mountain West selection the past two seasons, is looking to become the schools fourth three-time first-team all league selection, joining Marshall Faulk, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Kirk Morrison. Plenty of other defensive players received preseason attention from at least one publication. Junior Aztec back Nat Berhe and sophomore linebacker Jake Fely were among the players getting attention. Berhe is the top retuning tackler of the 2011 squad, and has 106 stops and three interceptions in his two seasons. He posted a career-high 10 tackles in the R+L New Orleans Bowl last season. In his first full season on the field, Fely had 55 tackles, 5.5 sacks and forced three fumbles. SDSU has forced a turnover i 13 of their last 14 games, including three or more in five times in the last 12 games. San Diego State has allowed a total of 124 yards rushing in its last two games combined. The Aztec defense has held its opponent to 100 yards or less on the ground in three of the last six games.
SDSU is 46-38-5 in season-opening games, including a 21-21-1 record in the Division I era. San Diego State has won consecutive lidlifters (47-0 over Nicholls State in 2010 and 49-21 over Cal Poly 2011) after failing to win the opener in previous five seasons (2005 through 2009). W-L-T Pct. The Aztecs have won consecutive openers for the first time since the 2003 and 2004 seasons. A win over the Huskies would provide SDSU with victories in three consecutive years for the first time since claiming five straight openers from 1993 through 1997. San Diego State is 8-23-1 when the season opener has been played on the road, including a 3-15-0 record in the Division I era. The Aztecs have lost their last 10 season opening games away from home, dating back to a 30-14 victory at Colorado State on Sept. 12, 1981. The other two Division I era season opening road wins were in 1973 at Utah State (35-7 on Sept 22) and Northern Illinois (35-3 on Sept. 12). Rocky Long is 5-7 in 12 career season-openers. In the Division I era, SDSU is 2-9-1 in openers against current members of the Pac-12. The victories came in 1972 (Oregon State) and 1995 (California).
Saturday marks third meeting between the Huskies and Aztecs, with Washington owning a 2-0 series lead. The teams first met on Oct. 2, 1982, with top-ranked UW winning by a 46-25 margin. The most recent encounter came on Sept. 13, 1997, with the third-ranked Huskies posted a 36-3 win. Both games were played at Husky Stadium.

1-0 since the league changed its name from the Pac-10 to the Pac-12 prior to the 2011 season. San Diego State is 7-36-1 in the Division I era (since 1969) against teams that were in the Pac-8, Pac10 or Pac-12 at game time. SDSU snapped a 19-game losing streak to teams from the league last season with a 42-24 victory over Washington State on Sept. 17 at Qualcomm Stadium. It was the first victory over a member of the conference since a 33-9 win over California on Sept. 2, 1995. San Diego State is looking for its first road win over a current Pac-12 since the Aztecs defeated Utah, at that time a member of the Mountain West, 28-19 on Oct. 15, 2005. The last time SDSU defeated a team that was a member of the Pac-8/10/12 at game time was Sept. 13, 1975, when San Diego State defeated Oregon State, 25-0. In Claude Gilberts 24th game as head coach, SDSU held the Beavers to 55 yards rushing, 152 yards of total offense and forced five turnovers. San Diego State is looking to record wins in consecutive meetings with Pac-12 schools for the first time since sweeping a home-and-home with California during the 1994 and 1995 seasons. As previously noted, current Aztec head coach Rocky Long owns a three-game winning streak against the Pac-12. He swept a home-and-home series with Arizona in 2007 and 2008 while at New Mexico. He also guided SDSU to its streak-stopping victory over the league last season when San Diego State defeated Washington State, 42-24. In his career, he owns an 8-12 record against the current Pac-12 schools.

Rocky Long, the schools 18th head coach, became the first San Diego State coach to lead the team to a bowl game in his inaugural season. Rocky Long posted an 8-5 record in his first season as head coach with the Aztecs. That is the highest victory total in a SDSU head coaching debut season since Denny Stolz finished 8-4 in his first year in 1986. With eight first-year wins, Rocky Long had one more coaching victory in his inaugural season as the previous two San Diego State coaches combined (Brady Hoke went 4-8 in 2009 and Chuck Long was 3-9 in 2006). Last season marked the third time in Rocky Longs head coaching career that his team has won at least eight games (also 2007 and 2003). His squads have won six or more games in eight of his last nine seasons as a head coach. Last year, Long helped guide the Aztecs to their first 3-0 start in 30 years, ended the programs 19game losing streak to Pac-10/12 foes, snapped SDSUs 23-game losing streak to automatic qualifying BCS teams and gave the program its first win in the Eastern time zone since 1972, all in the opening month of the season. San Diego State finished the 2011 season above .500 for only the second time in the last 13 seasons. The Aztecs won eight games in a campaign for just the second time in the last 15 seasons. Long has 73 victories while coaching teams in the Mountain West. That is the second-highest total in the history of the conference. San Diego State has placed five student-athletes on preseason national award watch lists in 2012. Junior tight end Gavin Escobar, senior center Alec Johnson, senior running back Walter Kazee, junior Colin Lockett and senior Leon McFadden are on the initial short list for their positions top honors. Escobar (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) is one of 33 players on the John Mackey Award Watch List (most outstanding tight end) and one of 145 on the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List (top lineman). Last season, the Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native reeled in 51 catches for 780 yards and seven touchdowns. His 51 receptions and 780 receiving yards were the second most by a tight end in school history. Escobar averaged 60.00 receiving yards per game, which were the third most in the country among tight ends. He ended up earning all-Mountain West honors for the second consecutive season (first team in 2011, second team in 2010). Escobar is on the preseason all-conference team for this year. Johnson (Denver, Colo.) is one of 51 players on the Rimington Trophy Award Watch List (best center). Johnson, one of SDSU's two returning starters on the offensive line, enters the 2012 campaign having made 29 career starts and is slated to start at center for the second consecutive year. Last season, Johnson never missed a game despite breaking his snapping hand (right) in the Aztecs' season opener. The MW academic all-conference honoree also helped SDSU rush for nearly 2,400 yards as well as finish among the nation's leaders in fewest sacks allowed (T-7th, 0.85 per game) and in fewest tackles for a loss allowed (15th, 4.46 per game). Kazee (San Bernardino, Calif.) is one of 52 candidates on the Doak Walker Award Watch List (top running back). Last year, Kazee rushed for 339 yards and four touchdowns on 74 carries (4.6 yards per rush) before a knee injury in the ninth game sidelined him for the rest of the season. Kazee also caught eight passes for 89 yards. For his career, Kazee has 1,042 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 229 rushes (4.6 yards per carry). Additionally, Kazee has 191 yards receiving on 19 catches. Lockett (Diamond Bar, Calif.) is one of 48 athletes on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List (most outstanding wide receiver). Lockett led SDSU in receiving last year with 970 yards and his 74.6 receiving yards per game ranked fourth in the conference. Lockett also tallied 678 yards on special teams in 2010, including a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown in the season opener against Cal Poly. Hes also on the 2012 preseason all-conference team. McFadden (Inglewood, Calif.) is one of 84 players on the Bronco Nagurski Trophy Award Watch List (best defensive player) and one of 35 on the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List (best defensive back). McFadden, who became the first San Diego State player to be named a preseason player of the year (offense, defense or special teams) in July, is looking to become the fifth Aztec in program history to earn first-team all-conference honors in three consecutive years. Last year, McFadden led the league in passes defended (17), while recording 46 tackles (35 solo), two interceptions and a sack.

The San Diego State football team is picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West preseason poll, which was released on July 24. The Aztecs had 173 points in the 2012 preseason poll, which is voted on by media representatives who cover the conference. The fifth-place projection is SDSU's second highest in the last eight years. Last season, San Diego State was selected fourth and finished fourth. It marked the sixth time in the last seven years that the Aztecs finished at or higher than their projected finish. SDSU also picked up one of the 30 first-place votes, a first in its 14-year history of the MW. Boise State was picked to win the league with 296 points, including 27 first-place votes. Only 74 points separated the second-place team (Nevada, 244 points) and the sixth-place team (Air Force, 170 points). Fresno State was third with 231 points and two first-place votes, while Wyoming (213 points) and SDSU (173 points) rounded out the top five at fourth and fifth, respectively.
San Diego State defensive back Leon McFadden has been selected as the Mountain West Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, the league announced in July. McFadden was joined on the preseason allconference team by tight end Gavin Escobar and wide receiver Colin Lockett. McFadden became the first San Diego State player to be named a preseason player of the year (offense, defense or special teams). McFadden, who is looking to become the fifth Aztec in program history to earn first-team all-conference honors in three consecutive years, is on the preseason watch list for the Nagurski Award (top defensive player) and the Thorpe Award (top defensive back). He's also the third player in the last 11 years (also Kirk Morrison and Lynell Hamilton) to be named to the preseason all-conference team for a second time. The Inglewood, Calif., native led the league in passes defended (17) last year, while recording 46 tackles (35 solo), two interceptions and a sack. Escobar, who is on the preseason watch list for the Lombardi Award (top lineman) and the Mackey Award (top tight end), had 51 catches a year ago for 780 yards and seven touchdowns. His 60.00 receiving yards per game in 2011 were the third most in the nation among tight ends. The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native was an honorable mention All-American last year by Sports Illustrated after earning freshman All-America accolades by Sporting News in 2010. A member of the Biletnikoff Award Watch List (most outstanding wide receiver), Lockett led SDSU in receiving last year with 970 yards. Lockett, who also had 58 catches and eight touchdowns, averaged 74.6 receiving yards per game, which ranked fourth in the conference. Lockett also tallied 678 yards on special teams in 2011, including a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the season-opener against Cal Poly.
San Diego State head coach Rocky Long announced that seniors Leon McFadden, Walter Kazee and Dominique Sandifer have been named football team captains for the upcoming 2012 season. This year, the special teams captain will be selected on a week-by-week basis and Eric Pinkins will lead the group at Washington. McFadden, a senior defensive back from Inglewood, Calif., has played in 38 games in his three seasons as an Aztec. McFadden had a solid season last year recording 46 tackles in 13 contests, had two interceptions and averaged almost six yards per carry on punt returns. McFadden ranked No. 1 in the Mountain West for the second consecutive year and 12th nationally in passes defended with 17, including six more breakups than any other player in the league. He enters 2012 as the preseason Mountain West defensive player of the year. Kazee, a senior running back from San Bernardino, Calif., has tallied 1,030 total yards in his 30-game career at SDSU. Kazee had one of his best seasons last year in becoming SDSU's second-leading rusher with 339 yards on 74 carries and four scores. He was also effective in the passing game as he tallied eight catches for 89 yards (11.1 ypc). Sandifer, a senior wide receiver from Gardena, Calif., is a two-year letterwinner who had his 2011 season derailed by injury. Prior to his setback, he played in 23 straight games from 2009-2010 in 2010 and was part of the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl team. He is one of two senior wide receivers, but the only one to have worn a SDSU uniform. In his two seasons, he has tallied 561 yards, averaging 11.5 yards per reception. Pinkins, a hard-hitting junior defensive back from Sacramento, Calif., is coming off a 2011 season in which he appeared in all 13 games. Prior to redshirting in 2010, he was one of seven true freshmen to see action in 2009 (seven games played). For his career Pinkins has 32 tackles, including a career-high five vs. Boise State last year.

Spent the final five games of 2011 as the interim head coach at Minnesota, leading the Gophers to a 2-3 record (team was 1-6 before his promotion) with victories over bowl-bound Illinois and Iowa. n Also had head coaching stints at UNLV (1994-98) and Nevada (1993). n Started his collegiate coaching career in 1984 as a graduate assistant at Minnesota under legendary head coach Lou Holtz.
n Previously worked with SDSU head coach Rocky Long at New Mexico as a defensive graduate assistant (199902), a video coordinator (2003-05) and a special teams/safeties coach (2005-08). n Coached Lobo place-kicker John Sullivan to consensus All-America honors in 2007. n Earned three letterwinners as a punter and safety at UNM, where he won the Chuck Cummings Memorial Award for morale and spirit.
