ABSTRACT
Keywords: Prostate Cancer, Research Proposal, HealthThe following submission is a research proposal concerning Prostate Cancer. A research proposaloutlines how research in a given subject area is performed, and suggests why it is necessary. Italso partly fulfills a requirement for the degree of BSc (Hons) in General Nursing. The word countfor the following assignment is 3,404 (excluding abstract, table of contents, references andappendices). The research proposal follows on from a literature review undertaken in the same subject area. This proposal is organized into chapters. Chapter 1 has sub-sections as follows:Background: outlines, in brief, findings from the aforementioned literature reviewStudy Rationale: gives reasons for doing research in this area: i.e. why it is important at this time.Aim: the goal of the studyStudy Significance: outlines the implications of the proposed study: i.e. who will benefit from it.In this particular proposal, implications for clinical practice, nursing education and nursingresearch are indicated.Chapter 2 discusses the proposed methodology of the study:Research Approach: this section discusses the different types of research approaches, and developswhy one type is more suitable than another for this given research.Participants: this section develops what type of sampling is proposed and why – what are the benefits of one type over another are there disadvantages? Inclusion and exclusion criteria areset.Ethics: a very important section of research is discussed in terms of consent, duty-of-care,anonymity and confidentiality of participants.1

Data Collection: explores how data should be collected, the challenges of collecting informationand how the researcher can overcome these. It also mentions how researcher bias can influencethe data, and how to manage this.Data Analysis: concerns organizing and gaining meaning from research data, in conjunction withenhancing trustworthiness and credibility of the data.Pilot Study: sometimes needed to identify deficits of the proposed study methods.Study Limitations: looks at what difficulties may ariseProposed Outcomes: what are the benefits of this study?Dissemination of Findings: suggests ways of getting the information out to those who may benefitfrom it.While the research proposal is a logical progression from the literature review and a necessary piece of work to complete an Honors Degree Programme, it was also personally rewarding to work on a topic of deep interest to me. My plan is to proceed with this research, with the guidance of atrained supervisor. Research into prostate cancer can help achieve health benefits (including physical, psychological, social and cultural), not just for men, but for their families, communitiesand work environments.2
