Abstract
A survey of the literature on the subject of the pharmacist’s role in patient safely wascarried out, and it was found that pharmacists can contribute to patient safetyin a wide range of ways. This essay focuses on current important areas for contribution as well as some traditional responsibilities directly related todrugs and dispensing. It deals with a selection of ways the pharmacist mustadapt in order keep patient safety as a core value as the patient’s needs change.First the topic of the Internet’s presence as a risk to patient safety is covered -concentrating on the illegal purchase of drugs online, misinformed self-diagnosis, and ways to deal with both problems. Then the need for up-to-date knowledge about increasingly popular areas such asalternative and complementary medicines is discussed. Following this aresections on the role of positive health promotion, correct diagnosis of patients presenting symptoms in the pharmacy, and the importance of having athorough checking system. The pharmacist must ensure the patient’s safety by rigorous checking of the prescription, and raising a query when any doubts are present. It is also important tomake it as easy as possible for the patient to comply with the treatment program, especially with elderly patients or those with accessibility issuesThe essay continues with discussions of patient compliance, accessibility issues, andvigilance in areas of crime, forgery and patient behaviour. In today’s society it is necessary to be alert to possible forgery of prescriptions whichcould jeopardise patient safety. Being alert to the patient’s behaviour can alsocontribute to safety by recognising symptoms of an illness which may otherwise gounnoticed. The essay concludes that the areas of patient education and facilitation as well as the pharmacist’s continuing education are the most important areas discussed.3
