Cuntas ar an Tionscnamh Caomhnaithe ‘Mayglass’ This essay, written in Irish, assesses the conservation project carried out with respect to a farmstead in Mayglass, county Wexford. Although the essay is more properly Modern Cultural Studies, I have entered it in the Celtic Studies and Irish section as a competency in Modern Irish is necessary for its perusal.

Ainm na haisteCuntas ar an Tionscnamh Caomhnaithe Mayglass1

Scríobh cúntas ar an dtionscnamh caomhnaithe ‘Mayglass’.Ón lá gur thug an Dr Ned Culleton, Coimeádaí Oinigh, Páirc Oidhreachta Náisiúntana hÉireann, in Ferrycarrig, cuairt at Shéamuis Kirwan sa bhaile ag Pollwitch, MaighGhlas,Co Loch Garman, sa bhliain 1988, thóg sé thart ar dhá bhliain déag antionscnamh caomhnaithe seo a chur i gcríoch. Is mar seo a scríobh sé; ‘”I realisedimmediately that I had found something unique, a rare example of vernacular housing”’ (Reeners, 2003: 21).Tá cúntas an-deas ar an teach thart ar an mbliain 1997, uair a bhí Séamus féin imithear shlí na fírinne, sa mhéid seo a leanas:Although a little rundown now, the Mayglass Farmstead exudes an ancient sense of snug comfort and east. The house stands with its back to the sea winds, as it hasfor 250 years – at a comfortable height for human perspective, neither too squatnor dwarfing the viewer. Its walls are overhung with oaten thatch, its roundedoutline shows the pleasing imperfection of something that is hand-built rather thanfactory-made.This is an earthen house. Houses very like it were plentiful once, but the one inMayglass is special because its interior has scarcely been changed for at least 1hundred years, (Doyle, 1997: 25).San aiste seo beidh mé ag ceistiú ar éirigh leis na caomhantóirí na bunphrionsabailcomhaontais a chur i bhfeidhm maidir le (a) Cosaint ar an bhFíor-nádúr an ruda, (b)Inaisraitheacht, (c) Íosthionchar, (d) Doiciméadú, agus (e) Saghas Caomhnaithe acuirtear i bhfeidhm. Beidh mé ag tagairt do na cairteacha caomhantais -
 An VeniceCharter, An Burra Charter
, agus
 An Nara Declaration
, a leagann amach córascaomhantais cuimsitheach, comhsheasmhach, ardchaighdeánach,idirnáisiúnta.Chomh maith le hionchur Shéamuis féin, agus a oidhrí, cítear liosta mór fada deghairmithe agus d’eagraíochtaí an stáit a bhí rannpháirteach sa tionscnamh ar  bhrollach an leabhair a cuireadh amach i gcomhar leis an tionscnamh,

Century Farmstead in County Wexford,
tiomsaithe agus eagraithe ag Roberta Reeners. Rinneadh sár-iarracht moladh de chuid
 An Venice Charter
a chur i bhfeidhm; ‘
understanding of what is to be conserved and of its significance.... arrived at through scholarship and the input of many disciplines’ (Starrett 2003: 4).
Fuarthas maoin ón gclár de chuid an Aontais Eorpach,
 An Raphael Programme
, chungo dtionólfaí comhdháil idirnáisiúnta, agus go gcuirfí suíomh idirlíon ar fáil. . ‘Sé antasc a bhí ag an gclár seo ná comhoibríú a fhorbairt i measc caomhantóirí oidhreachtana hEorpa ar mhaithe le cosaint, caomhnú, agus leasú na hoidhreachta, feasachtoidhreachta na saoránach a chothú; bunchloch de cheann de na príomhaidheannaluaite ag Dermot Nolan, Innealtóir Cosantais an tionscnaimh;
 Promote international links for this type of work. (Reeners 2003; 25).
Is tionscnamh go hiomlan faoi leith é Mayglass, anseo in Éirinn, dar leis an OllamhLoughlin Keally, Roinn Ailtireachta, UCD, “
the nature of the artefact, the coalitionof interests that came together to ensure it’s conservation, and the future that isenvisaged for it’
(Kealy, 2003: 2) agus is ceann ceannródach é chomh maith, mar adeir sé
‘ reflects an alteration in the quality of the contemporary interest inconservation’
(Kealy, 2003: 4).2

Don chéad uair riamh in Éirinn cuireadh suim i suíomh ar chúis úr: Publicly-fundedconservation project involving a vernacular building which puts the understanding of cultural value as it’s only fundamental justification. (Kealy, 2003: 6). FanannMayglass i tseilbh phríobhaideach, níl teacht isteach ar bith i gceist, agus níl ceadisteach ann ach ag speisialtóirí. Ní hionann oidhreacht agus táirge a thuilleadh.Fógraíonn
 An Burra Charter
an tábhacht a baineann le míreanna oidhreachta afhágaint nó a lonnú i gcroilár an chultúir ónar fhoinsíodar;
 placing the project withinthe culture from whence it derived’ (Starrett, 2003: 4).
Aontaíonn Alan Gailey leisan gcuspóir seo;
‘the very at of relocating buildings compromises authenticity’ (Gailey, 1998: 29)
. Dar ndóigh, bhí an rogha ag na caomhantóirí an áitreamh a bhailiúleo ina iomlán isteach go daonpháirc nó iarsmalann éigin. Táimid go léir eolach ar ansaghas suíomh oidhreachta atá coitianta timpeall na tíre mar áiseanna turasóireachtaagus oideachais. ‘
characterised by naturalistic presentation of past life-styles inoriginal buildings preserved in situ – or moved from their original settings intomuseum sites, or in replicas of original buildings, and occasionally in typical (but hypothetical) creations’ (Gailey, 1998: 18).
Ach is mar seo a scríobh Barry Ó Reilly;
‘First and foremost, the people of the locality should visit the house. It is on their doorstep and has been conserved at least partly in their name’. (Ó Reilly, 2003: 128).
Cuireann Gailey i gcuimhne orainn chomh maith go mbíonn méid áiritheaisfhillteachais i gceist le gach aon saghas caomhantais;
 As survivals from previous contexts, these pieces are in and of the present,bearing the motivations of their collectors, subject to the biases of their  presenters, and understood in the ideologically influenced minds of their users, museum visitors and scholars. (Gailey, 1998: 17).
 Measaim go bhféadfaimis a rá go bhfuil inspreagadh uasal na gcaomhantóirí le braithscint sa tionscnamh áirithe seo, agus go bhfuil ceann de na cuspóirí a luaDermot Nolan comhlíonta;
“Carry out an exemplary vernacular building conservation project;exemplary as a project strictly based on conservation principles, and as anexample to encourage other people to take an interest in conserving and  protecting vernacular architecture.”(Reeners 2003: 25)
Is mar seo a mhíníonn an caomhantóir teicstíle, Dinah Eastop, cosaint ar fhíor-nádúr an ruda mar choincheap caomhnaithe;
‘true nature’ includes ‘evidence of its origins, its original construction, thematerials of which it was composed, and information as to the technologyused in its manufacture. Subsequent modifications may be of such a significant nature that they too, should be preserved’(2006: 518).
Tagraíonn Eastop don inneall gaile, an cóir é a chur ar siúil, toisc gurb é sin anfheidhm atá ag inneall gaile nó, nó an cóir é a fhágaint doghluaiste ionas nach mbeidhaon caitheamh agus cuimilt ar na páirteanna oibríocha?Maidir le ‘Mayglass’, tuigeadh go bhfuil teallach infheidhme mar chroílár an tí, ach bhí an ceannbhrat ag titim as a chéile, agus ní raibh aon chaoi acu é a choiméad suasach taca a chur in airde. Bhí an argóint ann go gcaithfaí tine infheidhme a bheith ann,3
