I encourage you to use our subscription to World Book Student or any other encyclopedia that you have at your disposal to do the research necessary for learning more about Afghanistan. I also suggest that you might want to find more resources at your local public library. I have written this guide to be 4 days per week for 6 weeks. I have included the many activities which will help your student to compare Canada with Afghanistan. You can use the 5th day each week to research some of these topics at a deeper level. The last week your student will be asked to do a research report, you may want to use the fifth day of each week for this or devote time though out the study to complete this project. For each activity I have included the learning outcomes that are being covered for ease of reporting. Depending on your overall plan for Grade 6 Social Studies you may or may not want to explore each outcome. Consider this guide as an opportunity to explore many areas of Afghanistan. Some areas you may want to skim and some areas dive deeper into. Please adjust this guide so that it will work best for your individual student and your family situation. There are many other activities in the Breadwinner Novel Study that you may also want to explore. You may want to be aware of Afghanistan in the news, and where appropriate have your student watch or read current events as they relate to this country. We have included a DVD for your family to enjoy. It will give your student insights into life in Afghanistan both in an urban and rural setting.
