BISON

Known as American Buffalo is considered as North America's largest land animal. HABITAT: Plains, prairies and river valleys. DIET: Mainly eat grasses and sedges THAT'S AMAZING: Bison's thick fur offers great protection against harsh elements of American plains. Their winter coat is so thick and well insulated that snow can cover their backs without melting.

GRIZZLY BEAR (Brown Bear)


Largest predator that is different from black bears due to a distinctive hump on its shoulders. HABITAT: Rivers and coastal areas, mountain meadows and in the tundra DIET: Grasses, sedges, roots, berries, insects, fish, carrion and small and large mammals. THAT'S AMAZING: Grizzly bears have a better sense of smell than a hound dog and can detect food from miles away.

MOUNTAIN LION
Is also known as cougar, puma, panther, and catamount and is the largest wild cat in North America. HABITAT: it is found in all forest types as well as in lowland and mountainous deserts DIET: Deer and small mammals like mice, squirrels, porcupines, raccoons, rabbits and beavers. THAT'S AMAZING: Large as jaguars but are less muscular and not as powerful; where their ranges overlap, the mountain lion tends to be smaller than average. RACCOON
It has gray to brown fur and a black mask around its eyes with white fur around the mask. HABITAT: Wooded areas near water. It is also adaptable and is also found in suburbs and cities. DIET: Omnivorous and eat common foods like fruits, nuts, berries, insects, rodents, frogs, eggs and crayfish. THAT'S AMAZING: A raccoon's hands are so nimble they can unlace a shoe, unlatch a cage, deftly retrieve coins as thin as dimes from your shirt pocket..

PRONGHORN
Fastest land mammal in North America. Known as "prairie ghosts" because they are so elusive. HABITAT: Grasslands, brushlands and deserts. DIET: Eat herbs, cacti and desert grasses. THAT'S AMAZING: Active in the night and in the day. Has excellent eyesight and can spot a threat up to four miles away! When threatened it will attack using its sharp hooves.

MOOSE
HABITAT: Forest areas where there is snow cover in the winter and nearby lakes, bogs, swamps, streams, and ponds. DIET: Is a twig eater. In warm months it eats the leaves, twigs and buds and shrubs. It also feeds on lilies. In winter it browses on woody plants, balsam, birch, aspen and dogwood trees. THAT'S AMAZING: It has poor eyesight but good hearing and excellent sense of smell. BIGHORN RAM
HABITAT: Live in alpine meadows, mountain slopes and foothills. DIET: They eat different foods depending on the season. Summer: grasses and sedges. Winter: eat more woody plants and rabbit brush. THAT'S AMAZING: Sometimes when a group of bighorn sheep are threatened by a predator like a wolf, they group together in a circle and face out towards the predator.

MOUTNAIN GOAT
It is actually a member of the antelope family. It's mostly seen scaling steep, rocky edges. HABITAT: Rocky mountains and coastal ranges of northwestern regions of North America, including southwestern Alaska. DIET: Eat grasses, sedges, herbs, shrubs, ferns mosses and lichens. THAT'S AMAZING: They have been known to leap 10 feet from one ledge to another, and turn around on a platform that is only inches wide.

RIVER OTTER
HABITAT: Streams, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands and along marine coasts. DIET: Primarily eats fish. Also known to eat whatever is easiest to find, like crustaceans, mollusks, insects, birds, oysters, shellfish, crabs, crayfish, frogs, rodents, turtles and aquatic invertebrates THAT'S AMAZING: Can stay underwater for up to 8mins and can close their ears and nostrils to keep water out. BEAVER
HABITAT: Live near rivers, streams, ponds, small lakes and marshes. DIET: Tree barks and cambium, the soft tissue that grows under the bark of a tree. They also eat other vegetation like roots and buds and other water plants. THAT'S AMAZING: They are known for building canals, lodges and dams. They carry out their construction process of a dam on rivers and streams and build their homes near to the pond. They use their sharp teeth to cut plants and trees.

MOUNTAIN WOLF
HABITAT: Arctic. Along northern edge of the North American continent and northward to the North Pole. DIET: Musk oxen, Peary caribou, arctic foxes, lemmings, seals, nesting birds, Arctic hares. THAT'S AMAZING: Arctic wolves inhabit some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world where the air temperature rarely rises above -30 degrees C (-22 F) and the ground is permanently frozen.

ELK
HABITAT: Elk live in a variety of habitats from rainforests to alpine meadows and dry desert valleys to hardwood forests. DIET: grasses, forbs, shrubs, tree bark and twigs. THAT'S AMAZING: Elk breed in the fall. The male elk(bulls) wallow in mud to coat themselves with "perfume" to attract female elk(cows).
