T'Puram: The City Corporation and most of Thiruvananthapuram might see trouble in the trash dumps that now dominate every city street, but Roberto Masiero sees different. He sees a potential industry waiting to be born.
"Wastes are a major source of energy. Recycling (of garbage) is an opportunity' for economic development," said Masiero, who is founder and president of the Milan-based no-profit think-tank Think!" which studies how digital and new age technologies can be made to support innovafive development projects worldwide.
Innovation is key to addressing the garbage problem in Thiruvananthapuram, Masiero feels. 'You can develop an industry revolving around the recycling of wastes, and set an innovative example for other places," the Italian, who is on his first visit to Kerala, said.
'Think!' was born after Masiero stepped down as president of International Data Corporation, an ICT market research firm where other places Masiero he spent most of his career, in 2009. Think! focuses on how ICr-enabled technologies can improve a number of areas such as education, economy, health care and bridge the digital divide. It also looks into how ICF can spur productivity in local social systems, according to Masiero.
Think! had recently listed the e-Toilet project in Kerala as an example of innovation. The Thinivananthapuram Corporation is installing a number of e-toilets, designed by city-based Eram Scientific Solutions and manufactured by KELTRON, in the city. Currently, there are 400 toilets installed by various agencies across the state.
"It's an example of a project based on converging technologies". It also highlights sustainable models and the public-private relationship," Masiero said.
