Support the U-Pass
Re: “Standing up to City Hall” (Editorial, Nov. 21)
I WOULD LIKE to thank the
Ful-crum
or its editorial last week on theU-Pass—it is important to have stu-dents aware o the progress and de-lays o the initiative. Having been in- volved with the project or two years,it is exciting to see it so close to com-ing to ruition. I would encourage allstudents who care to see a universalstudent bus pass become a reality inOttawa, as it is in dozens o cities inNorth America, to email the coun-cillors o the City o Ottawa (emailaddresses can be ound at ottawa.ca)and express their support or the proj-ect. Supporters can stay up-to-date onthe U-Pass on the “Te University o Ottawa needs a Universal Bus Pass!”Facebook group.he U-Pass will save money, loweremissions, and make a more livablecampus and city or students—butonly i we can convey our supportto city councillors to indicate its ne-cessity. his project has risen andallen over the last 15 years withoutsucceeding, but we are now closerthan ever. Let’s not wait another 15years or something so crucial. histime, let’s have a Student Federationo the University o Ottawa (SFUO)initiative with concrete results. Let’shave a U-Pass.

Re: “Heckles” (Opinion, Nov. 21)
A FEW YEARS ago, the only issue Ihad when I used Fallowfeld park andride was how close a parking spot Icould get. Now, the only issue is I haveis whether I’ll get a parking spot at all,and how much my ticket will cost i I don’t.About a month ago I did get a $65ticket when I parked at Fallowfeldon my way to campus. Despite theact that I wasn’t blocking any othercars rom leaving, I was one o severaldozen cars ticketed that day. Had thetransit o cer been ticketing my carwhen I got back I likely would havepunched him in the ace or let loosean expletive-laced rant. Instead, Icrumpled my ticket into a little balland, in lieu o voicing my displea-sure, handed my crumpled ticket tothe City Hall employee when I even-tually paid my ticket last week. But Idigress.I read an article a ew weeks agoin one o the local Barrhaven news-papers that, just like the
Fulcrum
ar-ticle, slammed OC ranspo or theirhandling o the Fallowfeld situation. It seems to me that OC ranspo are abunch o lazy jackasses who are morecontent to hand out parking ticketsevery day than increase the size o the parking lot to accommodate theirincreasingly disgruntled riders. EvenBarrhaven Councillor Jan Harder wasquoted in the article as saying that it’sridiculous or OC ranspo to be tick-eting people when there is nowhereor them to park and they are notblocking in other cars.I couldn’t agree more with JaclynLytle’s article in the
Fulcrum
last week;unortunately, it’s one o a handul o like-minded articles I’ve read in thepast ew months. As much as I like tobitch and moan, I think I would pre-er i OC ranspo just fxed the messthat is Fallowfeld park and ride be-ore I get another ticket.

Let’s blame the Irish
EHICALLY SPEAKING, NO eth-nically, I blame the Irish or the Yes victory in the Canadian Federation o Students (CFS) reerendum. Why isthis, you ask? In the 19th century, Irishworkers were brought over to Englandto intimidate voters to vote or a par-ticular party. In the same way, the Yescampaign engaged in blatant electoralraud. I saw groups o Yes support-ers standing outside polling stationsharassing students. Tese supporterswould descend on a student, explaintheir argument, and then guide thebewildered student to the polling sta-tion. When I voted, I even ound a Yespamphlet inside the polling station!Tis is unequivocally the very def-nition o electoral intimidation. TeReerendum Oversight Committeeought to have enorced the rules andregulations o the SFUO constitutionon reerendums. I the CFS wants aireducation ees, perhaps they shouldstart with a air reerendum.

Diversity and solidarity
51.8 PER CEN and 48.2 per centare the numbers everyone is throw-ing around but I’d like to highlight aneven better statistic: 21 per cent.Tat is the percentage o the stu-dent population who voted in theCFS ull-membership reerendum. For those who don’t know, the larg-est recorded voter turnout in this his-tory o the SFUO was 18.9 per cent, which means that more students wereinvolved in this decision than everbeore. Now, as a member o the Yes cam-paign, I am overjoyed at these results, and at the realization o a dream thator many has involved years o longhours and hard work to have thischoice even brought to the students. As a woman especially, I am thrilledto be a part o an organization thathas ought so hard to make me eelsae and empowered on campus. Butnow the results are in, the campaign isover and we have collectively chosento join the CFS. It’s time to move on.Tis shouldn’t be made into a win orlose situation. As a riend o mine stat-ed, “We can change more as membersthan as isolated critics”. Tis meansthat we can now use our voice to helpthe CFS grow as an organization, be-come more bilingual, etc., and to bringthe concerns o the No side to the tableas well. It’s a matter o respect or the21 per cent o students who got in- volved by voting or campaigning thatwe work together to unite our campus,to reach out and understand the posi-tion where everyone was coming romand move orward to a solution. Tisis a time to unite as a diverse studentbody with a wide range o opinions, but a common interest in students andtheir rights. Solidarity!
