PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION
THIS
book is intended as a laboratory manual for all chemistswho have to deal with cases of poisoning. It is devised as apractical handbook, and for that reason the descriptive matterconcerning the organic poisons (Chapters VII and VIII) has beenseparated from the portion dealing with their identification in thelaboratory (Chapters IX to XII). Emphasis has throughout beenlaid on practical details, but it is hoped that as much theoreticalmatter has been included as is necessary.Chapter X, giving a systematic scheme for the identification ofthe alkaloids, was regarded by my father as the most importantin the book, containing, as it does, the results of a large amountof original work. It is the chapter which he hoped would be ofthe most value. The unfortunate death of my father, at the time when the firstgalley proofs of the book were being printed, robbed him of theopportunity to provide the final touches to his work, and to see itin its completed form. It has been left to me to carry on the workof correcting the proofs and preparing the book for the press. In this work I have been greatly helped by Dr. G. D. Elsdon, whohas assisted me to check the proofs. His advice has considerablylightened the work of completing the volume. In addition to Dr. Elsdon, other kind friends have helped, andI would like to thank all of them here. In particular, I mustmention Mr. N. D. Howard, who supplied many of the drawings;Messrs. F. E. Becker & Co., of London, who were kind enoughto provide the blocks for Figs. 5 and 13, and who made the drawingsfor Figs. 11 and 14. Professor Sydney Smith has been good enough

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
IN
preparing the second edition of this book I have tried topreserve its outstanding characteristic—that of describing methodsknown to the writer, by personal experience, to be reliable. Inlenticular, I have left untouched the author's scheme for theidentification of alkaloids, except for the addition of notes on thepreparation of the reagents. The general plan of the book isunaltered; there are changes in detail involving the inclusion ofHiialitative tests or quantitative methods which have been foundicliable in my laboratory.C. P. STEWART.

Hi! I'm building a chemistry virtual library so I was wondering if you could please send me this book. If it's possible myemail is phileas_brunner@yahoo.com I would be most grateful, Phileas.
Hi, I came across this resource while performing a literature search for my thesis work. I would like to read it more throughly but it is somewhat cumbersome trying to do that on screen. Is there any way for me to get a copy of the document via email? It would help me to understand my subject matter a lot better if I could get a copy that I can read clearly and repeatedly. Thanks. 7lightbourn@gmail.com
hello Please send to my email if possible. thanks for everything. taalialireza@yahoo.com
