I’ve been a psychotherapist for more than 40 years. Most people I see in my practice would
like to improve their love life in some way. There are many things that can help, mostly thingsthat make us feel better about ourselves, our bodies, and our connection with others. Now I have another thing I can recommend to my clients (as well as my friends): Zumba. Ibegan doing Zumba more than a year ago when a friend began teaching classes. When asked, I
told her “sure, I’ll come to a class and support you.” I had no idea what Zumba was but I was
happy to help a friend. After a few classes I was hooked. It was fun, I got a great workout, and Isaw a lot of my friends and met new friends.
For those who haven’t heard of Zumba or tried it out,
let me explain. It’s fitness with a twist.
Alberto "Beto" Perez, created the Zumba experience by accident. As a fitness instructor in hisnative Cali, Colombia, Beto's life took an unexpected turn one fateful day in the mid-'90s whenhe darted off to teach an aerobics class and forgot his traditional aerobics music. He improvisedusing his own mix of music from tapes he had in his backpack (salsa and merengue music hegrew up with). Spontaneously he created a new kind of dance-fitness, one that focused onletting the music move you (instead of counting reps over the music). Energy electrified theroom; people couldn't stop smiling. His class loved it! And on that day, a revolutionary newfitness concept was born
and most successful
dance-fitness program with more than 14 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking weekly Zumba classes in over 140,000 locations across more than 150
countries. As the Zumba website says, “Zumba Fitness® is the only Latin
-inspired dance-fitnessprogram that blends red-hot international music, created by Grammy Award-winningproducers, and contagious steps to
form a ‘fitness
party’ that is downright addictive.
