Objective
:In this lesson, you will learn the elements of a sentence. There are 5 basicsentence patterns in English includingSubject + Verb
Subject + verb
.
The simplest of sentence patterns is composed of a
subject
and
verb
 without a direct object or subject complement. It uses an intransitive verb, that is, a verbrequiring no direct object:Control
rods remain
inside the fuel assembly of the reactor.The
development
 of wind power practically
ceased
until theearly 1970s. All amplitude-modulation (AM)
receivers work
in the sameway.The
cross-member

Subject + linking verb + subject complement
.Another simple pattern uses the
linkingverb
, any form of the to be verb without an action verb:The chain

Subject + verb + indirect object + direct object
.The sentence pattern with the
indirect

and
direct object
is similar to the preceding pattern:We are sending

about a number of problems that I have hadwith my Exec comp word processor.The supervisor mailed the
applicant
a
description
of the job.I am writing
you

Subject + verb + direct object + object complement

and
object complement
is not common but worth knowing):
